"I need something much longer than 600mm", she said

I was looking at an ad on Kijiji posted by someone interested in "Pentax telephoto lenses". I have a 150mm for sale, so I contacted that person. The answer I got was something on the lines of:

Thanks, I already have a 600mm lens, I need something much longer than that".

I told her to get either a teleconverter or a telescope, and a rock-heavy tripod to support the rig.

But seriously, the best solution might be to get a sensor with more resolution, then crop...

Correction: the K 1000mm is f8 (or at least mine is.)

I only use >300mm lenses for subjects I cannot approach. I'm not interested in birds or any other form of wildlife, so that narrows it down to the occasional lowflying airplane or moonshot.

So I too am very curious what this person needs such a long tele for?

Sounds like a possible buyer for my Rubinar Makpo 1000/10.

I'd recommend a telescope with a t-mount adaptor.

both "K" i listed are mirror lenses, but your K 1000/8 is a "normal" lense, like the A*

Perhaps she is interested in birds or other wildlife (or is stalking a boyfriend ;~).

Other applications: surveillance; blackmail; inspecting a target (for crime or terror); shooting riots or mafiya funerals from a safe distance; extreme shyness; etc.

With a scope you get the following:

Focal Lengths on Digital Bodies:
Pentax PF-100ED Spotting Scope = 1910mm
Pentax PF-80ED Spotting Scope = 1530mm
Pentax PF-65ED II Spotting Scope = 1190mm

This includes calculating to FF sensor. So that 600mm is already 900mm. She coult use it for stalking when her restraining order is only a few hundred feet or so.

Tell her that length is not all that matters.

One can only speculate

Been down to Arkansas and southeast Mo. regarding research for Ivory-billed woodpecker,3 times.
Most of the work being done is based on accoustics rather than optical.
Do see a little of the big canon and nikon glass, few digiscopes with point and shoots attached.
Most research folks have assortment of P&S's,along with with most
staggering array of accoustic recording equipment you'll ever see.

All of those hypothesis are valid (the stalker/paparazzi hypothesis came to my mind). However, given that she's not drooling over stuff at her local camera store, but placing an ad on Kijiji, I can't help thinking that she probably doesn't really know what she's doing. She might have been using a 200 trillion X superzoom compact, and thinks with a DSLR she should be able to do even more.
