tamron 28-75 f2.8 with 2X telecon. - brilliant or stupid?

brilliant or stupid?

rather than get a DA*50-135, i'm thinking of getting a tamron 28-75 f2.8 and the best 2X teleconverter i can find.

purely for the range increase over the DA*. will the IQ suffer too much? ie: brilliant or stupid idea? thanks for any input from those experienced with teleconverters.

Yes, IQ will suffer, from what I hear the 2x TC's are not very good for retaining the intended IQ and you would lose the f/2.8 taking you back to like 5.6. If it were me, I would not do it.

Yep, forget it. Better off with a Pentax 50-200 f4-5.6.

Well maybe this has some merit. You will loose speed of course but I have the Pentax AF1.7 TC which would give you about 128mm. I've never put the 2 together but if you want I'll do a little testing on the weekend.

I find that TC to be excellent with very little loss of IQ. Maybe not as long as you wanted and these TC"s can cost $400 or so.

Tamron SP AF 2x teleconverter 7MC, $319.
Sigma EX DG APO 2x teleconverter, $393.
These give you a 56-150mm f5.6 zoom

Or you could get a Pentax 50-200mm f4-5.6 for $383. Or a Tamron 70-300 f4-5.6 for $230. Or Sigma's similar 70-300 DG APO for $342. Makes no sense at all.

If you are willing to spen $383 on a Pentax DA 50-200, I will sell you mine for $300 shipped! Overnight!

I believe Mr. Mofo is in Australia, and they use different money than us US folks

As to the original question, Stupid (hey, you asked!) You'll get a SLOW f/5.6 56-150mm zoom, with degraded optics. Keep your Tamron 28-75mm (great lens!) and pick up one of the 50/70-200/300mm telezooms.

As egordon observed yes this is Australian money I'm talking, as the OP is Australian too. As the exchange rate stands now, the US$230 pricetag for the same lens is AU$263. However 5 years ago 1US$ was worth as little as AU$0.52, it's now AU$0.87 but of course the price of imported goods doesn't change to reflect that.
