Lens questions - Pentax 28-70 2.8 Wedding shoot

It is that same old story, a friend is getting married (second marriage for both) only about 30 people invited and they asked if I would do pictures. Oh, it gets better, it is outside on the beach in September, and there will be a trolley ride around Chatham Ma so that should make it interesting.

This is not what should I do or I am scared how much should I charge thread. Just more a lens question and or if you want to give your $.02 that would be cool to. LOL

I know someone will say RUNNNNNNNN ( I usually do) lol but again they know what I can do and this is a small gig they would be happy with a few snaps. I will give more than that

I have K5 and 540 and bunch of lenses but was thinking of renting the 28-70 FA 2.8 (or if someone wants to let me borrow one)

Anyone, use (I will check out the Lens forum as well and reviews) but was curious about the length and thoughts on it’s performance on K5. I think from shots around that I have seen of the lens itself it is a little bulky, I really don't mind that. I just think the range is what I am missing in my other gear. I have 16-45mm – 50mm – 10-17mm – 77ltd - sigma 70-200 (but broke not reliable at the moment)

I will have free range to move about. It is a short service on the beach and just think the quality will be better than the 16-45 and allow little closer.

I also thought about renting the 50-135 2.8 but think it will be to much as it is pretty upclose event.

Thoughts and or comments?

You say "up close event". A you sure you would not want to use the 16-45?.
Yes, it is shorter than the 28-70 and only you know what length would suffice but, I am thinking that, maybe, the 16-45 could well suffice under the circumstances.

That is my.02c spent

All the best with the shoot, Pat.

Why not the Tamron 28-75 f2.8?

-Don't people call it the 'wedding photographer's lens' ?
-For a fast zoom the size is reasonable.
-Image quality is pretty good.

Although the 50-135 is a much better lens for me, it may not be wide enough if you are looking for a single lens. Unless you have 2 bodies, then you could use the 16-45 and flash on one and rent the 50-135 for the other.

Can vouch for the Tamron 28-75, but you'd have to be certain it's not wildly front or back focusing on your prior to the event. If you're not all that interested to buy a lens then the Pentax FA* 28-70 is very good to rent, and even the Sigma 24-70 is well acclaimed (if you can find one).

If you're just going with the one body, then I'd suggest these would be your only real practical choices, but I'd take the 16-45 just in case you needed that wide angle shot of the venus or do a group shot.

All the best mate.

Thanks everyone. I will have the 16-45mm for sure and will more than likely have the K10 on standby. Bruce, thinking don't want to me to close for the short ceremony so the 70 would be a little more versatile. Psychdoc, that's not an option to rent from the place I use but would like that range for reasons above. Thanks Ash appreciate the info. I will share the photos here for sure and still have a few weeks to ponder

if i had the same gear as you, i'd just stick the 16-45 and 540 onto the k-5 for most of the shots. the k10d would be paired with the 77mm along with popup flash for closeups. both flashes set to underexpose by about a stop or so, just to act as a fill
just my $.02

I shoot lots of weddings, and I use 28-70 and 70-200 if I look at most of by long distance shots say down the length of the church then they are mostly not more than 100mm and the majority from the front during the ceremony are around the 60-70 range.
both f2.8 at any length but the majority of shots are at f3 to f4

I'll go with those saying 16-45 + 77. I'd put the 50mm to bag just in case.
But with 16-45 on K-5 and 77 on K10 you should be fine. For out door wedding on the beach K10 will be just fine and K-5 will make the DA zoom fly. Flash on standby, and you are sorted.

On a side note, I would never take a lens I haven't tried properly to wedding or any other shoot like that. I did wedding for friends few weeks back and all I took were my primes. 31 on K-x, and rotated 24+55 on K-7 with 100 making it out for couple of shots only. If you know what you feel comfortable with you'll be able to pull it off with anything....
