$250 Tamron AF 18-250mm or $170 Tamron AF 18-200mm

I have enjoyed K20D without no AF lens for months, this metal-and-glass thing really got me, but now I think won't hurt to have at least ONE all-round AF lens for, well, difficult times

I have two lenses looking at me now, both used. The Tamron 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 AF XR Di II LD Aspherical IF Macro is priced $170 -not firm, probably could be $10-20 less if I bargain hard, and the Tamron AF 18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II LD for $240, the seller say it over and over again: FIRM PRICE.

Soo.. help me choose, please

The 18-250 is better than the 18-200 optically.

The 18-250mm is supposed to be significantly better optically than the 18-200mm variants.

That said, the price on the 18-250mm is unusually cheap, so I'd take caution.

Yes, this lens got more favorable reviews, I'm also leaning toward this lens. But does the almost $100 price differences really worthwhile?

I've seen used 18-250 sold for more than $300, so yes, I'm cautious on this. The seller guarantee a full refund, though.

The first lenses I bought with my K20D were the FA50/1.4, DA10-17, and DA18-250 (twin to the Tamron 18-250). 215+ lenses later, the 18-250 is still my most-used glass. Yes, it is optically much better than the 18-200. Yes, it is worth the $100 difference. If you are guaranteed a full refund, GRAB IT!! That is my recommendation.

A different opinion

I have read the reviews and the other comments. I just want to say that I have been using the 18 - 200 for several years now for vacation photos and could not be happier. I don't have the 18 -250 to compare it too. I may just have a good copy, but I can not find fault with the IQ of this lens. If it were me ,I would not pay the higher price. Don't think it is worth the difference.

I've had the Tamron 18-250 and more recently the Pentax version of the 18-250. I've been a big fan of this lens ever since it came out. It's just a great walk around and vacation lens.

Here are a couple of recent shots taken with it on the K5. First is 200mm f/8, ISO2500, 1/250s

This next one was 250mm, ISO5000 (I goofed - no reason for that high), f/6.3 (wide open), 1/1000s

I do agree that the price is unusally low, so I'd give it a good look before pulling the trigger, or make sure you can return it if you find problems.

On both lenses, you'll probably notice some vignetting at the wider ends and a little barrel distortion. However, if you use Lightroom 3 for processing, the automagic lens corrections will fix it for you.

I believe the 18-200 is still available new?
The 18-250 is discontinued, so you should see it from time to time on ebay.

that was not useful, without saying it is understood anyone will go to ebay as I have done and hence I haven't mentioned. apart from that KEH, PF marketplace here, all used equipment stores in adorama and b&h were all in my search. I was looking for any other that I haven't covered.

I had the 18-200 myself and it is for sure better than its reputation.

For your price tags I would still go with the 18-250 as it is better optically and build

I have owned both. The 18-250 is significantly better overall and worth the premium.

Don't question that. I just have to wonder how much real difference over-all it would really make to the final images.
It's small it's light and it does the job. For 200 bucks you can't lose.

Throw these in just for the record:

First one at 18mm, second at 200mm and third one a crop of the 200mm shot.
Good enough for me.
