Do you have a 77mm LTD?

I just got my new 77mm limited today and had a question. When I turn the barrel to manual focus I feel an odd clicking sensation (almost a gentle metal on metal feeling). It is not smooth like my other Ltds. Is this normal for the 77 or should I return it and get a better copy?

Thanks

Thats not normal, I dont know what other lenses you have but sounds like your trying to do quickshift, the FA77 does not have quickshift like the DA limiteds, if you want to use manual focus be sure to flick the switch to manual focus on your body

Original Poster
It does it when not on the camera, I didn't manual focus when I was shooting with it.

If you try to rotate the focus ring while camera is set to AF, you will feel/hear the clicking as you effectively will be rotating the pieces of AF motor inside the camera. This is something you should always avoid as you don't want to break your camera AF motor.

If you detach the lens from the camera and try to rotate the focus ring and still hear/feel something that is evidence of mechanical movement, you may have a bad copy of the lens. My FA77 is very smooth in that regard.

careful! yours may have the three loose barrel screws and could spontaneously fall apart like mine did:

i actually never noticed any problem with mine and then one day while shooting, the whole front assembly just fell out.

Bummer. I'll keep an eye for that.

Good shot, on the other hand. It has a certain Pentax-marketing quality to it

Yep, mine's smooth as a baby's behind as well.
Have it looked at by a repair centre if you're not sure of what to do.

Does this thread need another poster stating that his FA 77 focuses as smooth as polytetrafluoroethylene? ;-)
