Sigma 70-200 f2.8 on eBay

Since this lens has hyped up quite a bit on this forum, I figure I would let those interested know that one has reared its ugly head.

Pentax / Sigma AF APO 70-200mm f/2.8 EX barely used - (eBay item 150188789439 end time Dec-04-07 18:08:21 PST)

Man, who bid on this instead of taking the BIN for $900? That was a steal. Now it will definitely go for $1000+.

No Hype, I have had one for 4 years, it is a great lens, at least in my humble opinion.

I used this lens to replace my Series 1 70-210 f/3.5 (Version1) which is also a great lens, especially considering when it was made.

I just got a little lazy and decided I would go for an AF lens, and decided that it had to be at least as good and as fast as the MF lens it replaced. I also took the 1.4x TC at the same time.

I don't know whether or not this will go for a grand. This is a very good lens... but it is not the EX DG APO non macro version which is an absolutly magnificent lens. Of all the lenses I own, with the exception of the A 300 2.8, the EX DG version of this Sigma lens is the sharpest lens I own.

I am not 100% certain but lacking the DG designation may just be more a comment about the lens age. Pentax did not have digital until very late 2003, and the standard for all lenses at that time was to be capable to cover the full image circle of a 35mm frame. It was only when sigma developed DC lenses (digital format) that they needed the DG designation to identify full frame lenses.

Hopefully someone can verify this, but I suspect the lens is equal in every way to the "DG non macro" version

DG means there are more coatings on the elements at some point to combat the higher reflections off a digital sensor compared to film. Not sure how much difference it makes as the only comparison I can make is my 28-70/2.8 (non DG) and 70-200/2.8 DG - the 70-200 has much better colour and contrast than the 28-70.
