Tamron 28-75 f2.8 - BF/FF?

I've been considering the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 as a less expensive portrait lens until I can afford something better. A concern I have is that a back focus/front focus issue has been brought up by a few people.

Is this something that would be blatantly obvious to any user? Or is it a very subtle defect? Affects only autofocus?

Is it an easy repair (or maybe a DIY )? When I look for one on thse PF marketplace I want to know exactly what it is I need to be aware of; and to get confirmation from the seller that it is not a problem with that particular one.

Thanks
Ross

It depends what camera you use it on. I have the Tammy on my K10d and it seems to be pretty good, which is good because I can't adjust for BF/FF like the newer models.
If your camera can adjust for it you shouldn't have any worries. If not, and you're able to return it for another, give it a shot! It's a very nice lens!

Also depends on the degree of focusing error it exhibits on the camera, which may exceed the fine AF capabilities of the camera. Nevertheless, there's no way to know unless you try it on your camera. And it is a very good lens, regardless of its cheap price.

Just noticed you have a K-x, no correction for BF/FF. Give the lens a try anyway!

I guess I better update my profile as I gave my K-x to my wife two weeks ago. I now have a K20D.

Just bought one new on ebay for $399, incl shipping (which is significant up here). Maybe I'll get lucky and have no focussing issues. But if I do, they have a return/exchange policy.

That's the second lens I've bought recently. If my wife finds out, I'm in for some explaining. I might even have to let her use them! Bought a Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 last week.

The K20d can adjust for BF/FF....to some degree, as long as the lens is not too far off. If you can't correct it with the camera adjustment, return it for a new one. Good luck and Enjoy!

It's not easy to adjust FF/BF w/ a zoom lens 'cause most time the amount of FF/BF isnt' the same in different focal range. You'd be lucky if the lens has the same FF/BF behavior at two extreme ends.

Since the lens isn't very expensive, a lot users are pretty happy w/ their copies, and it's pretty easy to let go later on if you are not happy w/ it. There isn't much risk of buying it.

Mine has always worked pretty well. I haven't noticed any BF or FF issues that couldn't be explained by user error . As long as you're prepared to go through the trouble of returning it if you have issues, I think you should be OK.
