Thanks for giving it a go, Douglas, but surprisingly it's the other way around!
It just brought home the point to me about how important light is for the photo. Light is a little different in both pictures and it is hard to pick a clear winner even though one lens costs 10x more than another.
I guess the bokeh is a bit smoother in the first lot (but it's also shot at f1.4) and there is less halo around OOF objects, like the table. It's also probably a tad more contrasty as one can see on my daughter's face.
