SDM Paranoia!.

I own the 16-50 and 60-135. I'm thinking about the 300F4, but getting really bummed out reading about all these SDM failures. I've had the lenses for a few years and no problems, but after reading about SDM on this forum, I am not sure about the 300. From what I've read, it is a very good lens, but for how long? Thanks for any insights.

SDM is slow but the reliability issues aren't a problem for most users.

If you really want to stay on the safe side, you could try looking for a Sigma 300mm: Sigma 300mm F2.8 APO EX DG Lens Reviews - Current Prime Lenses - Sigma, Tamron, Adaptall and 3rd Party Lens Review Database

The DA300 lens is not one to worry about with regard to SDM. I've seen only 1 report of a failure with the DA300 since people started reporting SDM problems. Its always the 16-50 or the 50-135.

I have both the 50-135 and the DA 300 for a coupla years now, no problems with either. Both have excellent IQ

Pick your answer:

1. Stay away. It will fail sooner or later
2. No big deal, C/N motors fail too.
3. Its been fixed. They don't fail like they used to.

Who knows. Get an extended warranty.

I certainlyl can't complain about SDM. I was an early adopter--- bought a DA*16-50, and had to install a firmware upgrade even to use it.
of the 86 listed in the forum database, only 10 are older. Its been my walking around lens since I bought in in 2007. It's my technology of choice.

SDM is a flawed technology that Pentax refuses to acknowledge. Search this forum for users with multiple failures with expensive repairs. I would not touch an SDM lens.
