Tokina (ie, Pentax) 50~135mm /f2.8 lens review at Watch Impress

【伊達淳一のレンズが欲しいッ!】トキナー「AT-X 535 PRO DX 50-135mm F2.8」

In japanese but plenty of samples to view.

This lens will be released next year by Pentax as the DA* 50-135/f2.8.

From the review there seem to be some problems with Ghosting and flare control. Hopefully with the addition of SMC coating these problem can be solved.

thanx a lot for that one.

as for me, the lens seems a bit soft wide open?

does anyone else thinks so, or it's just a personal impression?

I found it a bit soft wide open at the telephoto end as well, eg, the red leaves test shot, even at f8.0 it doesn't appear that crisp, however, I don't know the actual test condition. There's also the possibility of an early pre-production or just a bad sample. For lens it may take a good sampling size pool, say 20~50 lens before we can determine if the lens design is a gem or a dud.

However I sincerely hope they live up to their * designition, as the previous FA*s all have been stella performers.

P.S. Just re-read the article and even the reviewer mentioned "It'd be interesting to see if the Pentax coating on their version of the lens will make a difference". with the reputation of the SMC coating I'm quite confident.

Thanks for providing this. It is interesting but a little distressing. I am hoping that Pentax hits a homerun with these lenses. The lack of in production fast telephoto zooms (f2.8) remains frustrating. Other than the Sigma 70-200 2.8, which gets such mixed reviews I would hesitate to buy it if I could find it in stock, there is appears to be nothing for pentax. In addition my reading of the manual indicates you have to input focal length for non-pentax lenses on the K10D. So let's hope these DA* are good and not astronomically priced.

Not for auto lenses only for old manual lenses I believe.. my Sigma EX 10-20 and Tamron 90mm Macro didn't require me to choose the focal length when I turned on SR...

Your response sent me digging deep into this and other forums and it appears you are correct. I appreciate your setting me straight...it opens a whole lot more lens options. Thanks again.

Don't be so quick to dismiss the EX 70-200/2.8 lens. For the past two plus years that I've been reading that 'other' forum, I've heard not one bad word about the 70-200. Now, if you want to talk about the EX 100-300/4 . . . you have every right to be concerned. The 100-300/4 is a 'hit or miss' lens. I missed with my copy!

The 70-200/2.8 is a very good lens. It is worthy of consideration. (But, I do admit that I've heard mixed reviews about the new macro version. If you can find one of the older versions, you will have a good lens.)

(p.s. I have both the EX 70-200/2.8 and the EX 100-300/4 as well as the two EX teleconverters (1.4x and 2x).)

Thanks for your insight. If I can find an older version I'll give it a try.
