Pentax FA31 - 1.8

Just a question for those with this lens or used it. I am Looking at buying the FA31mm for my K5. I already have a FA*27-70mm f/2.8 lens. As I already cover 31mm with the FA* would I get use of the 31mm lens or end up not using the 28-70mm as much. I get great portrait shots with the FA* so would I get the use.

It depends on whether or not you can settle for taking the prime with you when you would otherwise have used the zoom.

The 31mm has better IQ than the zoom, so I think you'll enjoy it.

Thanks Adam. I like to take two cameras So I could always have bothe if needed. I noticed at Adorama they listed the Silver and Black with different prices and called the silver a wide angle,Is there any difference other than the color.

If you need to shoot at the lower fStop, I'd definately go with the FA 31. Its a great lens. It's good for group pictures. I do think the focal length is a bit short for portraits if you wanted to use it for that. Your current lens is probably better for that.

I'd say it all depends on what portraits do you shoot and how do you shoot them.
In other words, if you shoot lot of head and shoulders at f5.6 and up, don't bother with 31 IMO.
If you do a lot of full body/half body portraits at f2.8 (and you would want wider f stop) then go for it.
Let's be honest, as good as 31 is I can't imagine there would be big difference between it and FA*28-70 at f5.6. Probably the OOF would be better and it might be tad sharper...
But at f2.8 it will beat the crap out of FA* zoom IMO, and of course you'll gain ability to shood wider than f2.8.

But for head and shoulders I think 31 is too wide. It's doable with the right skills and approach but more dificult than with 50-70/2.8 that the FA* offers you...

Regards
Peter
