Perhaps I just got a good copy, but mine is much much better than the Tamron I had before it. It still happens, but very occasionally, and I do shoot a lot at 300mm.
4 years and I've yet to see any purple fringing from my Sigma. I can't recall having ever seen any samples from the APO version showing pf either. As far as pf goes on the 300mm zoom lenses, IMO, Sigma does it best, followed by Pentax, and then Tamron.

You really need a small sensor to get good purple and green fringing. My old Sony H1 used to excel at it

That's awfully pretty for chromatic aberration.

LOL... I have to agree. For a moment I thought it was a pic of the Galactic Core.

Actually it is sensor fringing, not chromatic aberration. Contrary to what the 'experts' would have you believe they are not the same thing.

Not to be overly argumentative, but the above example looks like classic lateral chromatic aberration to me, particularly the way it has green fringing on the one side (and farther out of focus), red on the other. It's made more apparent by the severely blown highlights.

As you can see here, if you scroll down and look at the examples, this particular camera suffers both types of "fringing", quite badly.
