Get the 55-300 first. The lens is also good for travel. Lightweight, long reach, good price, produces good image. In other word, it has more use on average than 70-200f2.8. Still it cannot replace the 70-200.

I vote for the DAL 55-300. Great for soccer shots, but I have also had remarkably good success with it for theater shots since I'm focusing on person/s in spotlight.

I've decided to go to my nearest camera shop tomorrow (it's an hours drive away in Indiana!!) and try out both lenses on my camera to compare them. They have a Tamron 70-200 in stock, and Pentax 55-200 not the 55-300 but I thought it would let me compare the quality of the shots taken by both lenses and also see exactly how heavy the Tamron would be... I don't tend to walk around with my camera over my neck anyway so that might not be an issue.

Thanks for all your advice and opinions - I really appreciate it!

Da55-200 is a different lens. Imo, not as good as the da55-300. The da55-200 sweet spot is f8.

What ever you do, don't buy the 50-200mm! But it is good just to compare weight between a lightweight and heavy lens. When you don't take the Tamron, go for the 55-300.

It is good to see how that Tamron is hanging on your camera.
