The FA31 is not an expensive lens at all in the grand scheme of camera lenses. Seriously, anyone thinking it is expensive is clearly not doing enough window shopping at nice camera stores

Well, I suppose that's true. My most expensive lens is an fa 77 so I guess I still haven't passed the $1k barrier. I'm insured for my gear so I shouldn't have concerns about using stuff anyways. You're absolutely right.

It's an expensive lens for a hobbiest, generally speaking. If your whole budget is 1000, it would make sense to spread that over a few lenses, rather then blow it all on one (for many people, at least).

Great lens, but if you aren't even going to take full advantage of it, you might be better off with a more affordable alternative.

never start lusting for Leica gear then. Even the f2.8 primes are in the € 1000,-- and above league, even used, sometimes.

FA31 - visible distortion, larger and heavier than 40 mm lens, 58mm filter thread, no focus override in AF mode. Quite sharp even wide open (center), F1.8, mechanical quality is excellent, build in lens hood, would work on full frame camera. I love my 31, but have to admit that it is designed as wide angle lens not as a crop equivalent of a standard prime.
DA 40 - too small, no large aperture. Quite sharp although correction is not superb. Focus override, 49mm filter thread. I have one sitting around. This lens can do nothing special, but works fine for many applications.

Buy the 40 mm and if unhappy sell and compare to the 31 mm. Or vice versa. Or buy both and sell the one you dislike.

B&H will send one to € land for much less.

If price is the only concern, answers become simple. Selling a 31 mm lens used you will loose little of your investment.
