Sigma 70-200 F2.8 EX DG MACRO HSM

Would you buy the Sigma if it was available to Pentax at $1200.00?*

This poll will close in a couple of days. I'd be nice to get lots of votes to send to Sigma

Ok I thought I'd try to get everyone possible on the forum to vote (like a petition of sorts). We have almost 4400 active members here so that should say something to Sigma. There's tons of discussion on the wants of this lens and people on Ebay are willing to spend more than MSPR for the used ones that sometimes show up.

So vote yes or no as to whether you would buy this lens if it was available at the MSRP of $1200.00 USD and once this poll has run for 4 weeks or so I'll email the results from it to Sigma. Unless of course we only get 100-200 voters then that's not going to convince them it's worth the effort. I encourage those that own the lens to vote as well. If you own it but didn't, would you want it now that you've used it.

Here's the data on the new macro version that does not yet have the Pentax mount:
Sigma - Lenses

BTW 1 vote per member (try to keep it real)

* This is the Canon, Nikon and Sigma MSRP price on the Sigma Web site. Dealers have been selling this lens for considerably less in those mounts. Let's assume that if this mount was also in Pentax, that the store discount price would also match those of the other mounts.

I voted no, as I have given up on this lens being available for the Pentax ssytem and have now purchased the DA* 50 - 135 2.8, yes the reach on the 70 - 200 is better but this is not essential for me.

I owned 70 - 200 2.8 for my Sony Alpha system and really missed this lens when I moved back to Pentax earlier this year. Had Sigma made this lens available for Pentax, I would have imedialty purchased.

By "own it" I presumed you meant owned some prior version of this lens, and voted accordingly, as mine is neither HSM, or DG, or macro!

I own this lens but voted no to buying it at $1200. I would spend $1200 on a 300mm f2.8 prime. This lens is a $900.00 lens, and thats what I would pay. I actually got mine for $750 used on Ebay. Previous owner used it for 1 week so it was pretty much brand new. I had a Soligor 200mm f2.8 m42 lens that made this lens look soft, and I would definitly not say that the Sigma is soft. I sold the Soligor for $125 on ebay and I'm still kicking myself in the butt. If you dont want to pony up the 1200+ for the ones on ebay and/or the ones in the marketplace forum, I suggest looking for some fast m42 glass, or some manual focus k-mount glass (tokina atx 70-200mm f2.8), or possibly some Tamron adaptall glass. My favorite lens in my bag is a Helios 85mm f1.5. Made in the 1960's and I would put it against any modern equivelant (sp?). Sorry for the rant. Carry on.

I voted "don't care either way" because while I wouldn't buy it most likely, I'd still like to see it released.

I personally am more interested in the 50-135 and 50-150. If sigma released the 50-150 in pentax mount at competitive price to the 50-135, it would interest me more. Mainly because for a big lens, I'd rather have something longer.

I'd like to see a 50-150 in pentax, and a 120-300 in pentax.

I would buy it for sure, but at a price comparable to what it costs for C/N mount, which is about $900. I'm not spending an extra $300 for a Pentax mount on the exact same glass. I've practically given up trying to take telephoto shots at the concerts I go to, since with the Pentax 50-200 zoom I need 1/15 sec shots even at ISO 3200 and pushed digital post-processing. Maybe I just need to tell someone to turn on the lights.

And by the way, a manual Tokina KA mount with the same specs just ebay'ed for $301. I was out shooting when the auction ended, otherwise I might have fought for it.

Ok Allow me to be more clear on the price I quoted above. This is the MSRP for Canon, Nikon and Sigma mounts as listed on the Sigma web site. Dealers may sell this lens for $899 or $999 for these mounts in the stores. They may even sell them for those prices for a Pentax mount if it comes out. I can't judge that. This is the MAP price for all brands.

Yes. Definitely. Absolutely. Without doubt. Yes.

Btw good idea Peter. I'm surprised there are 6 "No"s to 10 "Yes"s so far... presumably this is due to the misunderstanding on the MSRP versus what it would actually sell for... but still surely people would like to see it released, or at least have nothing to gain from it not being released? The purpose presumably being to persuade Sigma to make the lens available in K-mount, maybe it would be better to not have the options "No", "Don't Care" etc and simply run it as a petition where people simply post if they want the lens and don't if it doesn't interest them?

In the meantime: Everyone, before voting "No" or "Can't afford"; please assume the lens will cost the same as it would for Canon and Nikon. This is how it works with other Sigma lenses and the same would apply here; it won't be $300 more expensive. As Peter has explained, the seemingly high price is just the MSRP.

Why are you surprised that so many people are voting no? I would venture to guess that most of us aren't sports shooters, and don't really want to haul around an aperture that is oversized for our needs. The price isn't really the issue, whether it is $1200 or $900, it is just overkill for a lot of people. Sure I would like to see it released, but that isn't a reason to vote yes, because the question of the poll is "would you buy it", and my answer to that is "no, I wouldn't".

Another reason why I wouldn't buy it is because I have the Sigma 105 EX macro and the 400/5.6 ApoTeleMacro, and they both have a muted color rendition in my direct comparisons with comparable lenses (specifically the Kiron 105 and a Vivitar 400). While it isn't a given that this lens would suffer from the same problem, if I wanted a 70-200/2.8, like Buddha, I would also wait for the Tamron version before making a decision.

Hi Peter.

I voted Yes and I owned one not long ago...

To be honest, I missed the lens very much. Even non-HSM version has a much faster AF speed comparing to Fa* 80-200 and not su much different comparing to canon 70-200 f2.8L. The image quality is superb that is quite hard to tell the difference to any other telephoto zooms I have used. It is so much lighter too.

If that is an option, I would definitely grab a copy

I voted no because I own what was roentarre's ^ copy. It'd be too hard to say whether it was an upgrade - the HSM would be welcome, but like roentarre said AF is already quick enough in most situations (even for motorsport it's passable on AF-C) and the macro is well known to give softer results. The only place I can fault the 70-200 I have is CA - wide open, as bad as my 16-45 at 16mm. Ah well. PP-fixable.

Yes that was the question, but why do you think the question was asked in the first place?
To quote Peter, it is "like a petition of sorts"...
"We have almost 4400 active members here so that should say something to Sigma"....
and most importantly, "once this poll has run for 4 weeks or so I'll email the results from it to Sigma. Unless of course we only get 100-200 voters then that's not going to convince them it's worth the effort."

I don't believe the question is here because Peter woke up with a burning desire to know what everyone thinks about this lens being made, purely for the sake of knowing it. The intention is fairly obvious - to get a number, a list, of people who want the lens, so that we can persuade Sigma that there is a significant number of Pentax users who do want it, so that they will go to the effort of making it for us this time around.

And that is why I am surprised anyone would bother to post "No", "Don't care" etc.

Well if all he wanted was a number, all he had to do was PM Mo and we could of rigged a poll together with 3500 Yes's.
