For those of you waiting for the DA12-24.....

Just curious....for those of you who are waiting for the DA12-24 which has been out of stock for the last few months with no new stocks in sight, what do you do? Do u go with an alternative lens like the sigma 10-20, Tamron 12-24 or you continue to wait?

I have firmly decided to continue waiting until either 12-24 comes back in stock or a new Pentax wide-angle zoom becomes available. There was a rumor about 12-35 WR zoom about a year ago. I considered Sigma 10-20 initially, but after using the [rented] 12-24 on a recent trip decided to not compromise.

Then a nice used copy of 12-24 came to the marketplace, and I snatched it. This is what I suggest - wait, and in the meantime look for used 12-24.

Yes..I did try to get a used one but the used copy are all selling in the 6xx range whereas a new one is only 700 or so.....so I feel the used copies are a little expensive for me....with that kind of price, I would very much prefer to get it new.

I haven't looked but is the same true for the Samsung 12-24 f4 (it's a carbon copy of the Pentax)?

Agree, it does not make much sense to pay 660-670 for a used one - I would rather rent again. In my case the seller was not trying to profit from the lens being out of stock, and the price was fair.

There is also the highly regarded Sigma 8-16mm. Too wide and not long enough for me though.

I'm waiting for it to return, or until I see a good used copy when I can afford it. I don't really want to get any other UWA.

garb the ebay one may be?

The 12-24mm used to be more expensive than 16-50.
I am expecting the 12-24mm will come back with a higher price when it is in stock.

buy it sooner, enjoy it more.

About 6 months ago i was considering the 12-24, and it was going used for $450. Hard to say whether it will be higher priced or not when it comes back in stock.

i've been leaning towards getting the new sigma 12-24 ex dg II that adds weather resistance as well, but I'm lacking the $1100 or so to do it - it's also a little slower than i would like for that cash)
Plus side it's FF compatible so usable with my film bodies

Anybody know why the DA12-24 is still out of stock? Is this due to the japanese quake or manufacturers parts unavailable or ?? It is hard to understand why a popular lens like this can be out of action for so long!

you can get the 12-24 at henrys in canada but the price is now crazy 1299.

PENTAX SMC DA 12-24MM F4 ED AL 21577 - Henry's best camera store in Canada

at this pricing the sigma with weather sealing doesn't look as bad

it also explains why it's in stock

The MSRP of the DA12-24 in Canada has been in that neighbourhood for well over a year now. Crazy is the right word...

The phrase "Beggars can't be choosers" springs to mind though... Clearly, the prices being asked would be outrageous - if you could indeed BUY a new one. However, since there is currently no outlet to satisfy the desire to purchase new... then that price used would seem entirely fair...

It really is a I guess a question of "How badly do you want one?"

Capitalism and the Free Market Economy - Awesome when you're the Seller... Crap when you're the Buyer.....

The 12-24mm has been out of stock for about four months. I find it difficult to believe the standard " fallout from the earthquake" answer. Perhaps Pentax is preparing a new lens line for production. We shall soon know.
