AF speed of FA31 Limited?

I currently own the DA21, FA43 & FA77. I shoot mostly portraits these days. Of the three, I seldom use the DA21, and my usage of the 43 & 77 is about 50/50. However, I often find myself wanting something right in between the 21 & 43. The obvious choice would be the FA31 or FA35.

I am considering selling the 21 & 43 to finance the FA31. I like the idea of a simple two-lens kit. I've owned both the FA35 & FA31 briefly in the past, and while I think they're very close in terms of performance, the FA31 just had that very special quality and aesthetic advantage that's hard to put into words. The easiest way to put it is that I was excited about photography when it was mounted to my camera.

Before I make the final decision, however, I am wondering how the AF speed is on the FA31. I can't really remember. Is it about the same as the FA77? Which would probably mean a bit worse than the FA35 and the new DAs?

Fa 31 definitely faster than Fa 77 in normal lighting. In dim light, Fa 31 is more accurate and hunting less since 31 is really a normal view on my book.

Fa 35 is good and reliable, not much different from fa 31 in terms of technical parameters on paper. As you said, there is something about fa 31 that cannot be described.

Da 21 ltd can be so sharp from what I had seen with Joele's shots. Just that this is a prime losing the whole point of being a prime given an aperture f3.5 and stopping down to f8 would have little difference to images either rendered by this lens or any sigma zooms.

I think the idea of a 31/77 kit is great. I have the 31 and 43, and the 31 focuses MUCH faster than the 43, especially when hunting in low light. The focus throw of the 43 is much longer, almost as much as a manual focus lens. The 31 has just a short throw, about 90 degrees, so the AF motor has less work to do.

Thanks for your reply. This makes my decision even easier. I find that I'm actually more creative with FEWER technical choices; that's why the idea of a super-high quality, two-lens kit appeals to me. Both the 31 & 77 are legendary, and I can't imagine not being satisfied with those two.

Yep, I'm thinking along these terms too.

I have the 31, a 43 and a 70, and want to get rid of the 70 to get a 77 at some point. I'll keep my 43 too though, but the idea of a 31/77 kit with the 43 along for a compact one lens option is nice.

Only thing better would be a full frame or almost full frame chip in my K10d with those same 3 lenses.

I thought of keeping the 43 for the exact same purpose: a compact, single-lens option for when I don't want to carry the 31 and/or 77. However, at this point I can't quite afford to keep all three, so unfortunately the 43 will probably have to go.

The reality of my situation is that I'm not traveling much with my camera these days. Most of what I shoot is around the house (kids) or on specific jobs where I don't mind carrying a camera & a couple of lenses. I rarely have time to just walk around with my camera anymore.

If I really miss the compact 43 option, it would be easy enough to acquire one. Also, I'm curious about the upcoming DA35 and DA35 Macro. They might be even better options for a compact carryaround (for me, at least).
