aperture-rings are also a good feature, if you want to work with retro-adapters as cheap macro lenses (ok, not with a really high field of depth, but it works great)
Aperture rings are pretty essential if you're reversing a lens.
But most lensmakers don't intend their lenses to be reversed.
With A-type mounts, aperture rings are superfluous for normal use.
Lensmakers aren't really catering to we abnormal optics perverts.
They're catering to their bean-counters, by removing excesses.
And that's why we don't see aperture rings on new lenses.

a matchstick fitted to hold the aperture trigger does its job also pretty good on new lenses

And that's OK if you don't want much in the way of aperture control. But it's a kludge -- and with the cost of decent manual primes still very low, and good enlarger lenses even less, why bother? Almost any prime that isn't damaged or utter crap will work well reversed. Almost any EL on ultra-cheap tubes will give great results.
