For a cheap walk around with good image quality - the F 35-70mm. Dirt cheap. Get a hood for it though, otherwise you'll get contrast issues like your 16-45.

I will agree with Peter and Marc here in saying that it is about knowing your gear well, and its characteristics in metering and rendition. Pentax DA lenses in general are very good in this way, though at times with the kit lens and even the DA 12-24 I've needed an EV boost of 0.5 to 1.0 stop to achieve my desired exposure in scenes where other lenses are OK at EV0.

Excellent suggestion. I got mine for US$11. They're often found as the kit lenses on 1990's AF cams. Sharp and agile, yup. Like a little bag of primes, yup. Needs a hood, yup. On a FF cam it's a general-purpose Super-Normal walkaround. On HF / APS-C it's a bit more specialized, very good as a Long Normal / Short Tele eye. Its 'macro' (close focus) is damn handy too.
