hi again,

I made an offer to buy the Pentax 1.7X AF TC for $500, but he would not sell at that price.
And this was in Europe.
The price looks the same in the States on eBay, so it would mean import tax, VAT too.....the Pentax 1.7X AF TC is really expensive.

I am going for the DA* 300mm f/4

Yesterday I was out "hunting" buzzards. On the way home this fellow suddenly appeared about 1-200 meters away, so I shot him instantly.

With AF it might just having been quite sharp. The bird was accelerating.

100% crop

200 ASA, f/5.6, 1/1000 s. K-5 and M42 thread Super-Takumar 300mm f/4

kind regards and thanks for your comments :-)
Morten

Good choice! I'm surprised by the price you cite for the 1.7x--seems pretty high.

Change of lens

Hi again

I decided a while ago - without giving too much concern at that particular moment to money - that I wanted to go for the Pentax DA* 300mm f/4

But things and money go and come. I could not afford the DA* 300mm f/4 even after selling all other lenses except the kit lens 18-55.

Instead I surfed the net - again - and decided that it would have to be the Pentax DA 55-300 ED.
I bought it and have tried it out - and I really like it.

It is a bit slow also aperture-wise but that does not matter so much for me, but I knew about the autofocus slowness.
But it is sharper and faster than the 50-200.

What I was after was something as good as the old M42 Super-Takumar 300 f/4 with regards to sharpness.
I believe the Pentax DA 55-300 ED is and more than that too.
When it comes to its unsharpness I feel the old lens had a red/blue cast to it whereas the Pentax DA 55-300 ED is more softly diffuse in a way that seems less like a 'lens issue' and more natural to the eye. This might just be me trying to justify my decision.

It may show a little too much contrast here.

kind regards
Morten

MBK: Watch on the sale site here. I got one for quite a bit less than that. The 1.7 af come up quite regularly. There was a tamron 300 f2.8 autofocus that came up a short while ago. The prices are better or match ebay and I think the quality is a bit more reliable.

It really comes down to how much money you want to spend. The FA*300 f4 is said to be very nice and weather resistant. On the 300 plus thread there is a fellow who has the Sigma 500 4.5 that is doing amazing things, but that is pretty expensive. Some like the Bigma.

I've got an older Tamron adaptall 300 2.8 and use it with the 1.7 af. Works quite well and gives you autofocus in a narrow range, which is actually a benefit. You get close and it finishes very quickly. Very sharp, but you have to stop down if you are shooting a bird in branches or flying against the bright sky.

A have an A*300 f4 coming. The 300 2.8 is heavy and it's nice to have a lighter carry around lens.
