They are the same lens pretty much. You are right, the tokina doesnt have SDM although it doesnt really matter as it and the tokina 16-50 are only available in EF and F mount

I will be so proud to own such lens that has not yet arrived.

Canon 70-200/2.8 IS costs more and weighs more as well. The contrast is not as good though it might have a better reach.

You still can show off once you got the amazing images to prove it to these users. But then, no matter how good pentax lenses are, most canon/nikon users would not give it a damn what lenses you have anyway.

Why not just enjoy this zoom

I find the B&H prices bizzare. pentax da | B&H Photo Video
I know the Pentax wholesales (friend that works for Pentax and nope I can't get better deals) and the Canadian cost is 10% lower on the 16-50mm than the 50-135mm. I'd assume that is the same for USA wholesale price. And BTW these American prices are excellent compared to even the Cnd wholesale. As usual we get shafted no matter the at or near par US/Cnd $$

Thank you for the heads up on the price, ordered one from B&H this morning. Wanted this lens for a long time, but $200 off sealed the deal for me quickly. Can't wait to have it on the body!

At first, I though this was rather odd focal length, and not so useful, but recently spent almost two months using 50mm on K100D, got used to it, so anything above 50mm and tack sharp - just added bonus

Now on to saving for 16-50mm...

Regards,
D

How true.

I was looking at Henrys and Canada Camera Saturday, as well as B&H on the 50-135 f 2.8

B&H is $799
Henrys is $1049
Canada Camera is $1299

Big difference.

Add McBain for 1049 - that is $250 difference ..... ummmmm not sure I want this lens (like a little longer) will the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 be out in January ? My gut says yes, but my head says it will January 2009 - The 16-50 is $949 but what I have read it is hit and miss on a good copy ..... May take a chance who knows....

Down here in NZ the 50-135 goes for about $400 dollars more than the 16-50 at $1899 (US$1477)!! Who controls the pricing on the lenses? retailers or Pentax reps in any given country?

For $200 more you have:
*SDM with full time direct manual overide;
*Weatherproofing (I don't think the Tokina has that);
*Shake reduction (I know it's not in the lens, but since you cannot get the Tokina for Pentax mount, you also have to buy a Canon or Nikon cam and they don't offer stabilization).

To me, the Pentax combo is well worth the extra $.
