This is a most interesting thread. Perhaps there is a 18-135 in my future?

I like my DA18 135

I sure like my DA18-135. I would like my DA17-70 if it wasn't for the two trips to Pentax for repairs to SDM and a circuit board. The DA17-70 probably still has better glass but when it comes to speed, lightness, range weather sealing, etc it gets hard to want to remove the 18-135. I have noticed some vignetting occasionally and I'm not sure why it is only occasionally but that is the only fault I can find with it.

17-70 is light? I held one at PMA, Sydney and was suprised how heavy it was. Then I looked at the detail and theres 17 hunks of glass in there. I think only the mighty FA* 250-600 has more elements.

Just looked it up
18-135 429g
18-250 470g
17-70 515g
16-50 600g

I agree that 17-70 is the best for general shooting (because of the 17mm and the across the frame resolution) but the 18-135 is better all rounder. 18-135 is only 1/3stop slower in the 24-70 range so thats hardly a massive difference. I like the WR too and the NOT-SDM

I had an 18-250 but i didnt care for the weight, the distortion, the vignetting its a (21-250), and the zoom creep.

If my wife complained about standing around waiting for me to swap lenses I'd use that excuse to buy an 18-135 for when on holidays.

I'm not sure it out resolves the 17-70, difference in samples? But it does not have SDM and it is WR.

Nothing against PZ, Klaus has a high benchmark, but the only review that counts is yours.
The SDM failed in my 17-70 it was repaired under warranty and sold. I am keeping the 18-135. There is not enough of a difference in image quality to worry about.

Perhaps I had a double negative in there or something but I said the 17-70 is heavy and unreliable because it has been to Pentax twice in 2.5 years of casual shooting. The DA18-135 is a fine lens that I am very pleased with. If we are pixel peeping the 17-70 probably does better but in the real world I don't think the difference is enough to make up for all the other benefits that the DA18-135 has over the DA17-70. I will be glad to see my DA17-70 sold.
