It Makes Me Laugh

That you can still buy the sigma 300mm 2.8 for k mount but they stopped production the 70-200. Just seemed a little strange to me as i was window shopping on the net tonight.

One of those and a bigma would go quite well together

There was a period that I really desire a sigma 300mm f2.8 but was unable to grab a copy for several months.

from my reading it would appear the sigma 300 2.8 would be the sigma competition against the FA* 300 series ? correct?

I have no experience with these high end lenses as I am new to the DSLR world and they were out of my initial budget. Just judging from the price of used FA* 300 going for 1000-1500 on ebay and the sigma new ones abit above that range I imagine they would be similar.

I was tossing the idea of either around but then decided just to get a low budget FA 80-320 and save for the DA*135

Window shopping lenses online is always fun. I am slowly putting funds aside for a LBA into some high end glass.

Ive got a UK camara mag around here somewhere that reviewed it a while back and loved it. Said that for the money, it performed very close to how the canon and nikon ones did.

Almost the same. I think the FA* 300s that go on ebay for that money are the f4.5 ones, so the sigma is certainly a lot faster than that would be.

CJ, I can't speak to the Sigma f2.8 but the FA*300 mm you are quoting the price on is the f4.5 version. It's a great lens but considerably slower and smaller. The f2.8 versions (if you can find one) sells for well over $2000 used and was around $5999.00 (MSRP) when it was new on the shelf. The Sigma EX series is very good glass though and I have 3 shorter versions that I quite like.

Actually, isn't that redundant...? 300mm f/2.8 and 1.7x yields a 510mm f/4.8-ish lens; no softness (but some lost contrast, and of course no zoom).

You can also get the even longer Sigma primes in Pentax mount still too. All (including the 300mm) are special order of course.

edit: B&H has it in stock?! Perhaps it was a special order that the orderer decided not to take. I got to know a rep in Sigma USA pretty well who enabled me to be able to buy that lens before my trip to Tanzania. I wanted the Bigma or 300mm f/4, but none were available. She mentioned in passing this lens was available ... @ $1500 more then what I wanted to spen total. A few hours later I called her back telling her I wanted it!

Click my gallery link and look for the Sigma 300mm in a couple of album titles.

edit: my bad. 300mm is not in all the titles.
All these were taken with it, Scenery | m8o | Fotki.com , some with 1.4x, some with 2x.

Then, All animal pics in the albums under the Tanzania folder are with it. You can get a 'summary of the best' of those by clicking my Tanzania link in my sig... It's well worth the money. Add the 1.4x TC and it's almost 'invisible' w/no downside. The 2X TC with it there is some loss of contrast and color, easily addressable in post, but killer sharpness still. It's really tough to auto focus with 2x TC + the drop-in Polarizing filter (that's about another 2 stops of loss, or, 4 stops loss total) so I don't do that anymore. PoliFilter's fine to use w/the 1.4x filter.

Ya, I noted others already pointing it out. The price it sells for is around $3500, not the $2500 of the Sigma. (btw, I got the worlds best deal on it @ 47th St. Photo).

Didn't they stop making it for everyone when they switched from the non-macro to macro version (or vice versa?)? Hopefully, they are going to bring back the 70-200mm f2.8 sometime but at least the DA*'s are out now.
