has anyone got the new sigma 500mm

After lengthy research and confirming B&H had stock, I ordered the Sigma 500mm lens. I was unlucky enough to get stuffed around with a money order and by the time B&H had my $5,000 they had run out of stock. Six months later I am still waiting, waiting waiting, inspite of the announcements. Has anyone out there been able to purchase the new Sigma 500mm lens for K mount? Or has Sigma or B&H got ahead of itself with announcements?

I have ordered one from CameraPro in Brisbane for AUD5700 with 2 year CR Kennedy warranty. Delivery expected in 2-3 weeks (I ordered 2 weeks ago).

Just my luck. I emailed CR Kennedy about 8 months ago and they said it was no longer available. I suspect I might get my lens about the same time as you, but without an Australian warranty and not 2 years. At least it is good news for others in Aus wanting the lens.

Best of luck to all of you.

It strikes me however that one can't be confident of the advice offered by local stores about the availability of these lenses from Sigma.

I had the experience several months ago (the thread is in here somewhere) of ordering a Sigma 400 5.6 from a local store that they insisted was still available via special order from Japan. The local store even maintained this was the case after I rang CRK directly and asked if this was true. CRK said no, the lens was not available anymore from Sigma.

But the store still insisted they could get Sigma to fulfil the order, so (ever the optimist) I waited another month or so and left the (fully-paid) order with the store. When I rang to follow up on the order some weeks later, I got some confusion from them, and then the store came up with some muddled answer about how the tsunami etc meant Sigma weren't able to deliver such a lens anymore. Then they refunded me and took that lens off their website. But it was a hassle.

Well AdrainM I will need to wait until next week. Thanks for showing off your lens. The lens looks great on your Pentax. Hope you have been eating your weeties and staying strong. That looks like a heavy rig.

For what it is worth, here is a shot I took this morning while the sun wasn't even really up (0630 local) and in bucketing rain. It makes a great combo with the K5, because this shot has to be 'on the limits'.

K5, TAv mode, 1/320th, f5, ISO 16000; uncropped, noise reduction, resize, sharpen in Photoshop CS5.

Thats an amazing shot at ISO16000, great colors and noise is well under control.
Maybe its just my eyes, but it does look a bit front focused.

The focus probably picked up on the flower, and at f5 there isn't a lot of depth of field, so your assessment of the focus point is probably corect.

Don't eat your words too much, Rawr. There are more than enough unreliable characters out there who will try to keep you on the hook even though they haven't got a hope of satisfying an order. Because I knew this wouldn't be a lens that would be held in stock by retailers in Australia, I checked with CRKennedy first and they confirmed availability and delivery time with Sigma in Japan before I ordered it.

By the way - I have been having fun playing despite the weather, but haven't felt like getting the lens too wet yet, so have confined my playroom to the front veranda. I checked it out with a Kenko 1.5x TC, and although it is slow to focus (it is a rather dull and wet day here), it is just superb with the TC attached - so 750mm here I come. I also did some checks for CA and even with massive glare and backlighting from the sky, there were no obvious defects in the shots I took.

First impressions: (1) heavy - make sure that your spouse works on her muscles so that she can carry it for you I also suggest a monopod or tripod.
(2) Delightful optically
(3) Works with a 1.5x TC even in low light but slower focus
