Lens hood for 77mm Limited?

Does anyone use a longer lens hood on their 77mm when they use it with their DSLR?

For my 31mm I bought a 58 to 55mm step-down ring and a 20mm long metal hood based on a thread on DPReview. It works great and provide extra protection for the front element for those of us who don't like use filters.

Do people do the same for the 77mm?

(In case it's not obvious, the built-in lens hood is optimized for use on film cameras, so a longer one would shade better for cropped DSLRs.)

Thanks - Greg

Are those any specific brand? Or just generic ebay ones?

How long is the 77mm one and what's the diameter at the lens cap end?

Thanks - Greg

The hoods on 43 and 77 are the same w/ 49mm screw-on thread so you can use them on any normal to mid-tele lens w/ 49mm filter thread size. The hood has a 58mm front thread for a clip-on cap, much easier to use than those w/o front thread. FA31 is a bit special, you can't use a hood like this w/o an extension ring or step-down ring. Lucky I found a 58mm straight hood (more like a filter extension tube) made by Heliopan, it works perfectly on a FA31 when mounted on a cropped dSLR camera, but it'd couse dark corners when used on a film camera.

Thanks frank.

I wonder how well this ebay link one would work on the 77. It's 36mm long. I don't have my 77 lens yet so I don't know how that compares to the built in hood.

Any tele hood will work. The only concern is that generic hoods being made in China or Inida are often poor quality. The thread will scar your lens. But if that doesn't bother you, then they can be had for a few bucks only.

Mine is the B+W 960 which is not cheap, but the original cap fits right on, not that I have found useful.

Understood. For my 31mm I bought a Tiffen (Made in USA) step-down ring rather than a generic, so no cheap threads touch my new Limited lens.

Quite a few folks are using Heliopan straight hoods for FA ltds.
Another option (the one I took for all my hoodless SMC primes in my MF days) is to get 49-52 step up ring and then metal clip on Nikon hoods from their old MF primes. There is a hood for Nikkor 105/2.8 and 135/3.5 that I used on my M85/2. I'm sure it would work great on 77ltd. If you leave the step up ring threaded in on the lens then you can even turn the hood bacwards for storage.

Thanks to the comments in this thread I remembered that I have Takumar metal hood (for 135/3.5, 150/4 and 200/5.6) that I use on my 50mm (D'oh!). It should work just fine on my 77 so I guess I don't need to buy anything.

Just for future reference of anyone finding this thread: the Takumar hood is 51mm long (not counting threads) and the diameter is 60mm. For comparison the 77's hood extends 14mm and is 52mm diameter.

I have used an inexpensive metal hood from heavystar on eBay with my FA 77. It is his "tele" model in 49mm.

Steve

Here a link to the one Steve is talking about.
New Metal Tele 49mm Screw-in Lens Hood + Cap | eBay

I bought the 58mm "standard" version for my 55/1.2 because it reeaally needs it when shooting outdoors.
I'm just wondering whether I could have bought the "tele" version instead since I'm only using on APS-C.

Anyone know of any links to hood design calculations?
Really, it might be easier just to buy it for $10 and test it out for any vignette.
Maybe I guess if its suitable for 85mm full frame then it'll be OK.

oh it appears there's more to it than a simple calc

I use the standard hoods on my FA LTD's and have never ran into a problem regarding flare outdoors.

I think what a lot of people fail to realize, is that many lenses use hoods that are shorter than what is optimum. The migration to digital only makes this worse.

There was, several years ago a spreadsheet out there on the web called Hoodcalc, which could be used to determine the length of the hood based on the sensor format (and more importantly the diagonal)

while the spreadsheet is not without issues, iuf you understand a few reference points it is very useful.

I uploaded a copy on the forum at one time

as a simple note, I usually move one focal length or more down, with my Tak's and the hoods. I use the hood from my 50/1.4 on the 35/2 for example, and the hood from my 200/4 on the 85/1.9

neither change causes vignetting.

Here's a photo of my new 77 with the Takumar 135/3.5 tele hood. Makes it look pretty big.
