It sounds like the A version took pretty good pictures, however I haven't been ab;e to find any listed for sale.

I'd advise you to try it if at all possible, and see if you think it's worth $150.00
The picture quality should be your deciding answer

F24-50 is a nice lens. Well worth it at that price. Especially if the $150 is Australian.

Well if you can't shoot with it you can look at some samples at least:

Pentax smc P-F 24-50mm f/4 Lens Sample Photos and Specifications

Stan's Pentax page has comments on the M and A version:

would this lense be much better than my sigma 18-50 ? or is it not really worth the upgrade?

I looked seriously at one of these when I used my PZ-1, many years ago. I had a 24mmf/2.5 a 50mm f/1.4 (both manual focus) plus the 28-105 FA Power zoom lens at the time, and decided then that although it was interesting, it was not fast enough (compared to primes) and that it really did not cover enough to make it worth while.

I would think your 18-50 would be a more useable lens, especially since it is wider at the short end.

Unless you are suffering from LBA. I would pass, BUT if you had for example the 12-24 and the 50-250 this would be a perfect fit in the middle

According to the SPLOSdb, it is an OK lens. Not bad but nothing to write home about either. Can't comment on the price, glass seems to be much more expensive in your country than in mine.

Kev.. What is the Sigma lens you are comparing it to exactly? F stop?

The Pentax F24-50 has a constant F4 thru its range. It also has excellent color and contrast. It delivers crisp images. On the 1.53 crop it has a 36-76 FOV. It can be used on your film camera as well.
