Coastar 28mm F2.8

Back in the early 80's, I bought a 28mm F2.8 lens from a department store (Caldor, remember them?) for my K1000. The name on the lens is Coastar, and it reads "Dyna-Coated Optics". I tried using it on my K200D and it's ok I guess. I likely didn't pay much for it 30 years ago.

Does anyone here know who Coastar is/was, anything about this and other lenses they made? Thanks.

I've read that Coastar lenses aren't much good for anything but setting your drink on.

No but seriously, I've never heard of them. Maybe a house brand?

I tried a bit of gargling and the best I could find is "Coastar is a bargain brand". That name is on cheap filters and lens tissues. I wouldn't expect too much from it. Tell us the serial number and we may be able to ID the maker. Or maybe not. But miracles can happen sometimes.

The serial number is 410743. The lens takes filters with 62mm thread. And of course, it has "Dyna-Coated Optics". Like you, the only references I could find for CoaStar are for filters, lens cleaning and a few select lenses.

Alas, I can't find serial numbers starting with 41 in any of my references or database. So this remains a mystery, to me anyway. Hmmm, did you try googling for "Dyna-Coated Optics"? I don't have time at the moment to follow up the 179,000 hits, gotta go pour some concrete. But maybe there's a lead there. Good luck!

The Coastar was the lens taken to Mars by the Cosmonauts. Betcha never heard that before. That's because the lens was crappy in the field and there are no pictures to prove the fact. But the lens was made in a social factory so the Russians kept making them. One day a Hungarian had a bright idea. Export. Seem's this Hungarian had a brother in law in Yugoslavia. This BIL had connections to the Yugo factory and well... Buy a Yugo get a free lens! Didn't go over to well. So the Hungarian and the Yugoslavian incorporated in Wyoming and exported the lens through a sister corp. in India. Which was just getting a foothold into the U.S. market. The crafty Indians added Dyna to "coated lens" as Dyna and Shore had a nice ring and the ever popluar DYNOMITE was heard around the world via a sitcom. So there you have it. A cheap lens, a cheap car and a even cheaper sitcom. Enjoy it for what it is. modern art.

Oh, it's late enough, I think we can consider it as post-modern, or at least early post-modern, especially when deconstructed according to Raelian principles.
