FA50 F1.4 Purple Fringing like this expected ?









Took this today with a FA50 1.4 I recently acquired.

Here's the common EXIF from these shots

Creation date: 10/15/2011 16:40
Camera: PENTAX K-x
Lens: smc PENTAX-FA 50mm F1.4
Focal length: 50 mm (equiv. 75 mm)
Aperture: F1.4
Program: Aperture Priority
Metering Mode: Pattern
White Balance: Auto
Focus Mode: AF-S
Image Stabilizer: stabilized
Noise Reduction: Off
Flash: Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode

The day shot is ISO 100, night are ISO 1600/800. Shutter speed is set by the camera.

When the shot is taken wide-open and it ends up being overexposed, heavy PF is perfectly normal. You can also expect PF near bright edges when shooting wide-open.

As Adam says, purple fringing can be an issue when shooting wide open and there are very bright areas against contrasty dark areas. Use of poor quality UV protector filters can also make the problem appear worse.

Stop the aperture down a notch and the PF will usually go away. You can also correct this in post-processing quite easily using Lightroom, DxO, PDCU etc.
