Lens Hunting?

I have a Tamron 28-300 that on several occasions wouldnt allow me to take a picture. I am assuming I was to close or at the wrong focal length because if I took a step back it snapped away or if I zoomed in or zoomed out it worked as normal. What am I missing? Really frustrating when on the tripod to find out after getting all set up I have to reposition everything. What should I be looking for in the camera to tell me whats wrong?

If I understand correctly, you are asking your lens to focus closer than its minimal focus distance (which should be visible near or on the focus ring).
