Tamron 17-50 f2.8?

I was enlightened in another post that my first choice to replace Pentax's kit lens, the Tamron 17-50, f2.8 is not available in the Pentax mount. So I called Tamron customer service and the nice person told me it's "being considered" but no release date. Does anyone out there know more? How does the most recent Sigma 18-50 compare? Actually, I kind of already know because both have gotten very good reviews. Just interested in hearing more as one can never have too much info. Meanwhile I'll probably get the Tamron 18-250 first and then decide whether to wait for Tamron or buy the Sigma for my second lens.

Is there any reason why you do not want to get the Pentax DA*16-50 f2.8?

I can't speak for him, but for me, the PRICE is what keeps me from getting the Pentax, lol, I would love to have it, but $800 is a bit out of my price range.

I am looking to get something to replace my kit lens, and have no idea what to get...

Sadly, it's the price for me too. I will be purchasing the K10d (great bang for the buck and then some), Tamron 18-250 (ditto bang for the buck and I'll need the long end), and a lens in the $400-500 range for low light and/or higher shutter speeds (The Tamy and Sigma have gotten very good reviews).

Seems like a waste to get an 18-250 and an 18-50. However, I think you can get the non-macro version of the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 at Cameta Camera for under $300. It is pretty nice.

My reasoning for the 18-250 and the 18-50 is that the 18-50 is a constant f2.8 for the whole zoom range whereas the 18-250 starts out at f3.5 and increases with the zoom. I will get the 18-250 first and see if I have a real need for the faster 18-50 and go from there.

Read the reviews of the non-macro version closely. The Macro model is supposed have significantly better IQ.

I'd agree with others--it's the price....I want to upgrade from the kit lens, and while I wouldn't object to this lens, I want to upgrade 2 lenses from kit level to better-than-kit.

If I went with the tamron OP mentioned, I could also add another tamron in the 70-300 range, and be out about the same cash. Maybe not getting the exact IQ as from the 16-50, but upgrading more of my kit, and both lenses come highly recommended.

but...I am still torn myself

My math may be a bit off, but I think you could get the DA* 16-50 in a setup that still keeps you close to the same price. With the Tam 18-250 around $400 and the extra $400-500 you are willing to spend, you could probably pull the DA* for $700-$750 (several places online) and pick up the DA 50-200 for the long end, a very respectable lens, for $175-200 (maybe cheaper if you get it used). Just a thought...
