Tripod mounts

How did pentax decide which 300mm lenses to put tripod mounts on and which ones to leave this important part of the equation off?

AFAIK, only the FA* 300/4.5 is missing a mount. I believe several members have added a Cannon tripod collar to their FA*. Considering how light the lens is, I never cared when I had one, but I've since sold it in favor of bigger glass, which, well comes with the collar it needs.

i have read somewhere (maybe DPR) that a Canon 70-200 f2.8 collar fits onto an FA*300 f4.5. Also i did see a similar thread the other day showing pictures a Canon 100 f2.8 macro lens collar going onto a DA*200 (there was some black gaffer tape involved to make it a tighter fit.) . I think it was here somewhere?

The K 300mm f4 is missing one
the M* & A* 300mm f4's
the 6X7 300mm's are missing them as well and I think they are f4 too.

So if you were a f2.8 you got a tripod mount at the factory and anything higher than that it was a crap shoot.

I had a K 300mm f4 and I ground the white button off that to put one of the aftermarket canon tripod collars on it and it worked. I would consider the A* 300mm f4 if it had the mount but without it its functionality is seriously handicapped in my opionion. Buying one to see if I can make something work is a bit of a stretch considering they are several hundred dollar lenses.
Does anyone have an A* or M* that can measure the width of the body if there is a place with no moving parts that could take an aftermarket tripod mount?
