Manual focus users poll

How old are you, and do you use manual focus lenses.

I got this idea from another thread that suggests the demand for MF lenses will die off with the users.

What do you think?

With Catch in Focus (CIF), anyone can use MF lenses.

There are many superb MF lenses like Carl Zeiss, Voigtlander, Pentax ....

Split screen is more accurate. But also need to calibrate with washers.

I am not so sure. I find that especially with fast lenses the AF confirmation is still a nice thng to have. Micro prism collars and split image are good, but to really nail it, i think in some cases the camera is better.

I use 2 different split screens, a single diagonal split in my K10D and a dual split in my *istD. I think the dual split is better in some cases, because 2 disruptions in the continuity of a line are easier to spot than one.

Really? I found out in my K20, the CIF is ok, but not razor accurate. I have K50/1.2, A50/1.2, lots of 1.4 in 50 and 55. However the K5 CIF indicator does allow even more deviation. I have both jinfinance dual split and kateyez optibrite. Ironically, i like the cheap dual split better.

Also, wider than 50mm is hard to see through the view finder; i have to depend on the infocus indicator. From 55 and up to 150mm the splitscreen is very good. At f1.4-1.2, i feel i can only depend on the splitscreen. in close range, it's still hit and mis, but chance to hit correct focus is much better.

As you age your eyes become less able to focus so auto focus is a real help.

I find the same, I really like the dual split, that would be a great topic for another poll, but I am not sure how many people have tried multiple split image screens

I also find ultra wide has me depending much more on the focus indicator than normal to tele. it is quite hard with the very large dof of an ultra wide to hit focus visually.

I don't think it'll die off. The young guys don't have cash to get the newest glass so the legacy MF primes are often their prefered way of gwtting to good glass. Not to mention there is some excellent (I'd even say to these days unmatched) glass to be had...

I'm approaching 30 and don't own MF glass at the moment but went through few and considering getting some MF lenses again...

I doubt demand will die with the users, there will always be short-on-money students dying to buy a MF lens instead of living with only the kit lens.

The only reason for upgrading my current body would be
if Pentax came with a brighter viewfinder with standard
good screen for MF. I'd love that.
AF and I became never friends.

I pretty much dumped all my MF lenses with the exception of the Sigma 50mm f/2.8 Macro and A 200mm f/4. I like to shoot quickly and AF is the way to go for me as relying on MF to grab spontaneous moments is just too slow and too much of a hit and miss thing.

I've never been sentimental with my gear and I didn't find it difficult to get rid of the plethora of junk MF lenses that I once accumulated in the past. After using good glass, I don't ever want to collect some cheap and crappy MF legacy glass no matter whatever past reputation it has, so no more M42, K, M series or any lenses requiring adapters for me.

hopelessly flawed poll. you can't measure the popularity of something if you count how many people use it, but not how many don't.
