Sigma 100-300mm f/4 market price?

Hi Everyone

What would be a reasonable asking price in the current market for a Simga APO EX DG 100-300mm f/4 in perfect condition? Is the 100-300 still a sought after lens or has it's legacy turned to legend?

Thanks in advance.

It is still in demand

I bought one of the last available new ones from ACE Photo via Amazon at the end of last May for $1,379 (just looked it up). They aren't offered for sale very often but I have noticed people wanting them. I've no idea what I would do without mine, it is a very good lens. I shot the attached performance photo last night at 300 mm and I haven't touched it from the DNG except for a crop & my batch output sharpener. Since I shoot a lot of ballet performances from the back of the house, its an important part of my bag. Its also a great portrait lens. Before I spent 3K for a Sigma 2.8 version, I'd probably buy a non Pentax version and get a non Pentax body for the lens. This is a very good lens with a very useful range. In the condition you state, I'd look at your receipt and use that price. Anyone looking for that lens knows what it is.

The last one I saw on eBay (USA) approximately in Feb.-March 2011 was priced at $900 including Sigma 1.4x TC. Nobody bid on it. And it never showed up again. The seller was from Canada, but he was not the first owner. I remember it because I was looking for a long good zoom at that time and was considering it for a moment. I ended up with DA*60-250/4. Anyway I may consider it again, if the price is not very scary.

I am the original owner of this lens, not sure if that makes any difference to the price or not.

When I bought this lens, they were around $3300 here in Australia. This was in 2008, but even towards the "end of life" the price didn't go much below $2600, which is very close to what I paid for it.

Would $1500 (AU) be too high of an asking price?

Still not sure I want to sell it as this lens has absolutely awesome bokeh and is great for portrait shots at 100mm, but there are other lenses I'd rather have in my collection.

I have an itch to compare the DA*60-250 and the SIgma 100-300. But I better pass on this one. I should buy that Canadian glass+TC for $900 I guess.

Have a look in the SOLD section for it, theres actually a few old theads showing up down in the Similar threads window at the bottom of the forum page due to the title of your thread.

Having ben a person chasing one of these a while back,, anywhere between 780.00 and 1500 I have seen. Dan actually bought the last one sold here on the forum somewhere around the 1000 mark, but all depends on the bidding wars that occur when one comes up. If you decide to sell, you wont be waiting long for a long stream of buyers, maybe also check the "Wanted" section of the Marketplace and approch those who are wanting one and see what they are prepared to pay.

There is one for sale at 800 EUR at the moment in a local brick & mortar shop, a bit high in my opinion.

Until recently Vanbars had them listed at $1800ish. I tried to buy one but they couldn't supply and they removed the listing. They still have Nikon/Canon ones listed at that. They have been listed as discontinued on the Sigma website and the HK based websites that sell through eBay have stopped listing them for Nikon and Canon which probably means they've run out. A Nikon one sold last week for $750 or so and there's currently one (another Nikon mount) at $600. I am looking at paying about $2500 for a 120-300/2.8 (although that will involve purchase of another body) as I've just about convinced myself one lens can do the job of 2 (no need to buy a 70-200/2.8) and I get to upgrade my AF capability in the process (yes the cost of what I'm contemplating is much different but there's many factors involved)

So... if I was to change tack and buy a Pentax mount 100-300/4, I'd probably be prepared to pay $1000 (inc postage to Melb!). I notice in past threads you've had problems with that lens and a K7 you've since sold so I'd need reassurance it was the body not the lens.

Cheers, Nige

This lens is D/C and is a sellers market for this lens. Easily worth over $1k...check the recent prices in the forum marketplace.

I've had both, now only have the 60-250. They are very close, a slight edge in IQ to the Sigma as it is superb at all focal lengths at even F4, the Pentax is of course smaller and lighter, HSM and WR.

It was definitely the body and was solved with a sensor calibtation. I knew it was the body as I didn't have any issues with this lens and my K10D, and now my K20D.

$1000 is a price I'm not willing to part with my lens. Personally I'd want at least $1300 so that I could buy the other lenses I am keen to get. Anything under $1300 won't be financially viable.

Might throw it on ebay and see how I go.

I picked one up (s/h of course, but almost mint and with a 72mm UV and Sigma case) in the UK earlier in the year via the UK pentaxusers forum.

I reckoned that I had got a (relative!) bargin at just under £600 (around $950US? or about 700 Euros) on the basis that I could probably sell it and break even/make a small proft if I did not get on with it, but others have gone for rather more that when they do come on the market!

NB - at the moment it is NOT for sale

The Sigma 100-300/4+Sigma 1.4x TC combo was priced at $999. Again nobody bid on it.
Ironically in my local Craigslist there is the Sigma 100-300/4 in Canon mount for $700. It started at $750 though. Then it's been re-listed for 1-2 month without any sell. The seller did not mention the lens mount at first. When I contacted him, he was so happy to get a potential buyer...

I've seen a new one in canon mount for $599 (still available) while I sold my pentax mount one with box and everything for $850 or $900 a year or two ago. I guess most canon shooters like the 100-400mm Lis more or the 70-200mm with or without a TC.

That makes sense. Not having IS would certainly be a bummer.
