It depends on how low-light you mean. It's at least twice as fast as the 70-300, since that was F4-F5.6. Only way to get faster than a 2.8 is to get a 85 1.4.

Thank you all for the comments. Tomorrow I will be taking the lens to church...yes...I said church! I have no fear this lens will be "too noisy" to use. IMHO it is no louder than any other lens in my arsenal. I do not own, nor do I want a SDM lens. I wanted a lens that works each and every time I press the button. Wish me luck. My football player is playing in the praise band. If someone complains about the noise...I'll be sure and post!

I don't think anyone will complain about the K-5. When I had a K-7 it was a real treat having such a quiet camera(with screw drive lenses). My K-r and K100D aren't allowed anywhere where noise was a consideration. ZIP ZIP CLACK CLACK CLACK ZIP CLACK!

I absolutely love the Tammy 70-200/2.8. I sold my DA* 50-135 for it and never looked back (well, I miss the smaller size). Nothing but great images. A bargain.

Your pictures certainly confirm my intial findings....

I was lucky and got a good deal on a one of these from Amazon the other day. I really wanted a 60-250mm, but at about half the price, I figured I could live with the Tamron for a while, even if I did not expect the Tamron could replace my 55-300mm due to reach.

My first reaction when I got it was WOW - this is WAY too BIG. Oouch! Not doing a lot of sports photography, the extra speed is not of that great of a value to me, so maybe I could just live with my 55-300mm???

Anyway I figured I would do some testing and see how good it was: I was blown away. At 200mm F8 the Tamron was MUCH better than the Pentax 55-300mm at 200mm. Even at 200mm F2.8 a cropped picture looked better than a similar sized 300 mm F8 from my Pentax! Now I must admit this was a very quick indoor test (though on tripod), and I am still very skeptical of the Tamron being THAT much better than the Pentax, so I will have to do some more testing this weekend. The reason I am skeptical is that I have been reading the 55-300mm holds it own when stopped down, and that is defintely not what I got.

IF the preliminary tests holds, I am defintely keeping the Tamron, even if it is a monster size (to my standards), and I could even sell my 55-300mm.

Great lens indeed. Fear for the SDM failure of 50-135mm, I pulled the trigger on the new Tammy 70-200mm. I think I will take the mono-pod with it next time.
