No, it is still a 50mm.

However, it gives the same *angle of view* a 75mm lens would give on a film SLR. See this: Crop factor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

after reading this thread this a.m. decided to dig out my 50/1:1:2, don't use it much anymore, but it certainly has taken a beatin' over the years.........image shot f/2 1/20th iso 200 hh
guess it still wrks ok tho' there was some noise .....thinking maybe of replacing it......

If I recall correctly, the 1.7 is essentially the same lens optically right from M to A to F to FA series. Same number of elements/groups, same configuration. The only difference is in the electronic bits. For the 1.4, I think the optical design is different between the M series and the newer lenses.

All that aside, any of the 1.4's or 1.7's are great lenses. I've used the M 1.7, A1.7, M1.4 and FA1.7 at different times, and can't say anything bad about them.
