16-45 discontinued in japanese market. Soon in the rest of the world ?

i was looking on the japanese web site of pentax and i saw this :

The 16-45 is discontued for the Japanese market.

Japanese market is the first one impacted when something change is the digital market product.

will the 16-45 be replace soon ? along with the K5 ? I found no information about it on the Pentax web site, so no speculation (please don't mention "the format that should not be named in the Pentax world" )

With other discontinued lenses like the FA 28 and FA 35, just as soon as they weren't available, everyone had to have one. So anyone on the fence should buy now or wait a while for prices to fall back to reality.

The DA16-45 has been showing up on various discontinued lists for a couple of years now, along with the DA14, FA50, and several other lenses that continue to be available. I suspect what we're really seeing is possibly temporary halts in production to ramp up for other lenses, with the hope being that existing stock will be enough for a while.

Check this thread from Jan 2010:

"PENTAX'S JAPANESE site is reporting that four lenses are to be discontinued. The DA 16-45mm f/4ED AL, wide angle zoom, the DA 50-200mm f/4-5.6ED, telephoto lens, DA 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3ED AL [IF], zoom lens and the FA 600mm f/4ED [IF] telephoto lens are all on the site's list to be discontinued."
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-news-rumors/87678-lenses-discontinued.html

The only one on this list that's left to drop now is the 50-200mm.

Hasn't the 50-200mm ED been replaced by the WR version?

indeed

@ Marc Sabatella : Pentax is showing the 16-45 as a discontinued model on the japanese, not just "out of stock". I really think Pentax is emptying its stocks of 16-45.

The fact that the K5 is price dropping + 16-45 discontinued tick me a bit. Both at the same time, it make my imagination working at full load

It makes sense that it would be discontinued in favour of the 50-200 WR and DA L, but it's still showing in the Pentax Imaging site. PENTAX Digital Camera Lens Lineup

I haven't heard any official announcement that the DA 50-200 is discontinued, have you?

Someone should tell the people at Futureshop here in Canada. They're still selling the 16-45 f4 for $399... It's literally dead stock and they still insist on that price.

I think the 16-45 is one of the oldest DA lenses, introduced to get a wide angle on the APS-C DSLRs, so I suppose it makes sense to replace or update it, though most people are happy with it. I have no desire for it, but I hope they donīt discontinue it without a replacement, the lens lineup is thin enough as it is.

Was the FA 600mm f/4 only discontinued in 2010???

I'm afraid there would not be any replacement for DA16-45. There is overlapping DA*16-50/2.8 SDM available.

Probably, the 16-45 went out of production when its replacement, the 17-70, was introduced, and now existing stock becomes low.
The 16-45 is optically a nice lens, but with a mechanical flaw, the play in the frontgroup has a significant effect on the image quality.

not for the price the DA* is twice the price of the 16-45.

My guess is that Pentax could probably replace it with something else, still wide angle and a bit longer in range (17-70 ?), to do a new kit lense with the K5 successor. It sounds logical to me to give a better kit lense option with the flagship, than with the mainstream body.

wait and see
