Just purchased first non-kit lens

Hi all!

After much much much research and pondering, I just purchased a used Pentax M 50mm 1.7 on e-bay for use on my Kx! You know, tbh, I never really understood why people had so many different types of lenses. But after looking through so many of the images of these little lenses, I thought to myself - I must try this! So excited!

You know why some have so many different lenses? For the same reasons why women have so many different shoes.
I, for one, no longer complain about women wearing so many different shoes because I have learned that each shoe allows the woman to walk a little differently. A little difference in the movement of the hips as she strolls.
What does this have to do with why we have different lenses? Not much. But everyone has their own reasons, I suppose.

You know, the problem is that once you start using it, you will always wonder what something else can do for you. So you start adding another (faster) 50 , or a 28mm, or ...

And before you know you have to join https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/55383-lens-buy...anonymous.html

Some flowers (taken with the M50/1.7) to celebrate, congratulations

You can never have too many lenses -- unless you run out of storage space. Why acquire many lenses, many of the same focal length? My lame excuse is, FOR TESTING -- it's just dispassionate scientific inquiry to see what's 'best'. The actual reason is, FOR TASTING -- because each lens acts and feels and delivers differently.

Even the SuperTak and FA versions of the 50/1.4, which have near,y identical optics, are very different in use. One with smooth firm manual focus, the other with fast agile autofocus, the evolved coatings -- and of course they're very different than my planar Yashica ML 50/1.4 or my rich Tomioka 55/1.4, or the incomparable K50/1.2.

Other Fifties are renowned for their sharpness and/or bokeh and/or character and/or whatever: the SMC-M and Yashinon-DX 50/1.7s; the Meyer Oreston and Olympus OM-S 50/1.8s; the Rikenon 50/2 and 55/1.8; the Zeiss Tessar and Meyer Domiplan 50/2.8; the Meyer Primotar-E 50/3.5; the Macro-Takumar 50/4; the SuperTak and Mamiya and Petri CC 55/1.8s; the Helios-44 58/2; and many others around there that I wish I had. All are tasty treats.

All slow ones, and multiple Helios abuse. Well, it's a start.

Now you can look for those I mentioned above. Have fun!

Wasn't the 50/1.7 a kit lens in its time?

Is a helios *really* classified as a 50? I mean, the number says 44, not 50..........

That's why i got 3 of them, was not sure . They were cheap anyway.
Anyway i think that compared to canikon, AF 50's and manual second hand are expensive. So i won't touch 1.4, 1.7, 1.8 at current prices.

Then look for Yashica 50/1.4|1.7|1.9, Meyer|Pentacon 50/1.8, Sears|Chinon|Cosina 50/1.8|2, Rikenon 50|55, Sears|Mamiya 55/1.4, Petri|Mamiya|Porst 55/1.8, all those in M42 or PK. And look for easily-modded mounts like OM, C/Y and Exakta. The world is your oyster; grab an oyster fork and dig in!

I think you'll love that f1.7 50mm. I got one for my K-x a couple weeks ago and have been thoroughly enjoying it. This is my first manual focus lens, and I never imagined that it would be so usable. I find focusing by eye through the viewfinder to be almost impossible, but Catch In Focus works like a charm. I've gotten so many great shots already, and I continue to be amazed at the kind of images this old lens produces. Here's a shot from yesterday of my 2-yoa looking in the mirror at the hair salon.

I got the lens! Yay'! Took it out for a few test shots (some below).

One thing I noticed, and maybe someone knows why - I have it set to Manual mode on the camera, chose my aperture, then hit the green button to get the shutter. Well, sometimes, the camera wants to set the shutter to 0.3", and I have no idea why. This is ISO 100, and in bright daylight. Anyone know why it might do this?

Also, it's interesting to see after I blow these images up that things were really NOT as in focus as I thought they were! to be fair, it IS a windy day today, and stuff moved a lot But, what is this "catch in focus" i keep reading about? Does that help? Thanks everyone!
