Should I keep it or exchange for something else?

Hello all,

Please help me out decide on this. I received a Pentax 17-70 Lens as my bday gift as everyone in my house knows I need a good walkaround lens and since I have Pentax K-5, they all went ahead and bought me Pentax 17-70. ( they don;t know about Sigma or Tamron ). I initially was going to purchase either Sigma 17-70 or Sigma 17-50 due to the advantage of f/2.8 and also macro capability of Sigma 17-70.

I have never used Pentax 17-70 and as I checked its review on the site, I wasn't really impressed by the score it received.

Has anyone used this lens and could you please share your experience. Should I return it and get the Sigma instead?

Thanks,

Take some shots for yourself. You have it so try it. What can you gain by sending it back without even a test shot or two(hundred)

I keep it !

My impression with Pentax 17-70 , Its sharpness is more even (edges vs center) compared with Sigma HSM Macro 17-70 f2.8-4 or Tamron SP 17-50 f2.8. So, I keep it as my main walk around lens. Yes, this lens is not f2.8, but with better ISO performance on the later DSLR shouldn't be a problem for most situation. Compared with others lenses I mentioned above, its performance @f5.6 and above is difficult to differentiate among those lenses. Pls, be considered as per my experience, my Tamron need focus adjustment +70 to get proper focusing and you need to do it yourself as Pentax Services Centre won't entertain this problem.

This was my second favorite lens behind my DA*16-50 for outdoor photography. It does have a slight tendency to vignette with a CPL at 17mm, but other than usually wanting to roll in +1ev with it on my K20, I really have liked this lens. I don't use it as much these days because I've gotten a DA*50-135 and it sorta have replaced the DA 17-70. Still though, I've had very good results from it.

I have the MF version of this lens, optically it's very good - f4.0 maximum aperture shouldn't be a problem if you have a K-5. If you are confident this lens isn't going to magically transform itself from AF to MF lens (just as warranty expire), keep it. If not, go for a screw drive AF lens - better for your peace of mind.

Look at the photozone.de reviews:
Pentax SMC DA 17-70mm f/4 AL [IF] SDM - Review / Test Report - Sample Images & Verdict
Sigma AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC (Pentax K) - Review / Test Report - Sample Images & Verdict

The Pentax performs better than the Sigma.

I would agree overal with earlier comments: Try the lens and see how you like it. There would not nothing worth than returning it without a try IMHO.

Hope that the comment may help....

Don't you have lunchbreaks

The Sigma 17-70 only maginfies a little more than the Pentax (37% vs 31%); neither is real macro and I personally would not make that a big argument in favour of the Sigma.

Any idea how your housemates will feel if you exchange? Breaking friendships is not worth it.

Congrats with your birthday.

Lunch break? hmm 15 mins max...

what do you think of Sigma 17-50? I'm assuming it would sharper than Pentax 17-70 especially one step down to f/4.

housemates already know how picky I'm, that's why they kept the receipt for possible return or exchange.

Thanks.

If you can't find the time to *try* the lens, how will you find time to actually *use* it??

I'm taking this month off to study for my boards. by the time I take my test, it's already passed return due.. that's why I was asking for you guys input..

I'm heading out now take some photos and compare with my Tamron 28-75 or sigma 10-20.. I might need to stay up a bit more tonight...

I just have a feeling f/4 won't give me sharp images unless one or two step down vs if I go with like SIgma 17-50 with one step down at f/3.5 it will give me sharper image than Pentax at f/4...

If you are going out to shoot, why not take the 17-70 with you as well? You can't tell without actually shooting with the lens, I don't shoot with mine anymore since SDM failure but I found the images acceptable across the aperture range. Your own pictures will tell you more about the lens than any of us can describe the characteristics of the 17-70. But if you are bent on returning the lens for something else without actually shooting with it, do it.
