Kit Lens Usage?

Hey all,

I bought the K10D with the kit lens as well as two other lenses but am using the kit lens much less than I thought I would. I know it isin't a bad lens by any means, but I always either use my FA50 or Tamron 70-300. How often do you use your kit lens if you even still have it?

Just curious.

Cheers

If I had the collection you do I'd use it all the time.
For that matter when I had the exact same lens range you had I used it 95% of the time, but that's mostly because it was the best landscape lens.

However now that I have several other landscape lenses I rarely snap it in place.
Although I won't leave home without it.

About a 50/50 split between it and my Sigma 70-300. Now that soccer is done for a few months, the Sigma will probably get a lot less use. And like mentioned in the previous post, my lens line up is almost as bare as yours. Just add an old Sigma 35-70 f/2.8-4 to it.

I never bought the package of k10d with the kit lens. It seems it is capable of getting fantastic images better than primes sometimes.

Since I was 14 yr old, I used a canon kit lens 35-70mm f5.6-6.3 for my film camera. It had been a hell of 4 years that I always wished to own other lenses as I blamed my pathetic photographs as a result of that kit lens ... (Naive I know)

The DA 18-55mm kit lens is excellent when shooting IR photographs. Even better than the DA 16-45mm as it never suffers any hot spots.

None of my Dslr's came with any lenses. Just bought the bodies, then a lens after.

I didn't buy my K10D with the kit lens, but with the Sigma 17-70. *That* I use on a regular basis, although less so since I got the FA35/2.

The DA 18-55 is better than any zoom in its price range. It is even better than some of the wide angle primes! Pentax did a great job with the design, and beat out the poorer kit lenses that Canon and Nikon provide. Although - I prefer primes for their contrast and sharpness.

I have bought 3 kit lenses over the years as I bought cameras, (I still own all of them, BUT...)

My first kit lens was an F2.0 XR Rikenon that came with my Ricoh XR2S, It got quite a lot of use, until I stumbled across an SMC 50mm f1.4 used in great condition for an unbelievable price, clearly the pentax lens soon pushed the slower Ricoh lens aside. Kit lens useage went down (in percentage of shots) as I bought a 24mm and 70-210, but really this was a case of shooting more since I now had a better assortment of lenses.

My second Kit lens was a PENTAX 28-105 FA lens that came with my PZ-1, This still gets a lot of use even with my DSLRs, but I am looking to replace it with something faster (probably either a 24-60 or 24-70 sigma f/2.8) Note I am looking at keeping full frame lenses as much as possible as I still use my PZ-1 from time to time.

My third kit lens was the Pentax 18-35 mm that came with my *istD. This also got a lot of use, and since it is full frame, It also spends time on my PZ-1 because 18mm is a nice wide angle for film. In fact, I often travelled with both *istD and PZ1 and almost always used the wide angle on the film body, and the longer lenses on digital.

Over time, I have added 2 additional bodies with no lenses, a KX and a K10D.

My 18-35 is now not used as often, as I bought a Sigma 10-20, which I love, and use for a lot of sight seeing, in fact the 10-20 accounts for about 40% of the 6000 shots to date on my K10D.

Generally speaking, from my experience the kit lenses are all good, and get you started, but fall out of use as your specific needs grow. I find you always want longer, wider and faster.

Had two. Got one with the DS and one with the K10. Sold the one from the DS and working on selling the one that came with the K10 never taken out of the box

i used mine alot, but i just uprgraded to the 16-45 f4. in terms of focal length though, it was the one lens that covered pretty much all the range i needed. i just wanted some better glass, hence the upgrade.

Hmm interesting.

I guess subconsciously I regard it as not as sharp as the FA50 or Tammy so am reluctant to use it. This might just change my mind. Thanks guys!

Bought the K100D body only, with the 10-17 at the same time. Wanted a faster and sharper lens than the kit, so I got the Sigma 18-50 2.8 (and 70-300) that same weekend.

Use it fairly often. Bought DS with 16-45 and K10D with 18-55. Figured it would be easier to sell one of the cameras with a kit lens some day. Use it for IR photos (already had the Hoya 52 IR filter). Also leave it on DS for a small travel system. It is a good lens. Crazy not to buy with camera for the give away pricing.
thanks

I now use my 16-45mm and 50-200mm kit mainly for camping/traveling. Once i got my primes: DFA 100mm and FA50, I use them all the time, the color and detail are much better.
