Tamron SP 300 mm f2.8 How good and How much

I think the title says it all. How much is this really worth and how good is it.

I would be looking to use this, along with a KA adaptro and my 1.7x AF TC to give me effectively an 500mm F4.5 AF lens.

I intend to test it out with this combination before purchasing, but I was wondering if any one has shot with this combination, especially using flash as well, with a K10D

Please post your shots!

I really like mine, I got the 360b in like new w/ box for $500 and shortened the tailpeice so it would take the adaptall 140f tc (supposed to be 1.4x but is more than my kenko 1.5x, I don't know which is right). Manual focus is really sweet, less than half turn from about 7 feet to inf. (tricky with my old eyes though) Here's a couple with the 140f. Before I got my second KA adapter so I don't know if it's f4 or 5.6

got mine for 205usd delivered. it's got a couple of very small chips in a couple of the internal lenses but does not hurt IQ at all that i can see. these were taken with it and an adaptal 200f(yeah, i have one) 2x TC.. tripod and i was panning so give me a break on the small amount of motion blur.

i just can't believe the 200f is so well adapted to this lens. it's much better than the common 01f 2x.

TOM,
where did you see the 200f??? i've only seen one offered and it was with the 300/2.8. i asked the guy why he didn't split the auction and he didn't know how rare these are.. wow, 360usd, looks like a pentax AF 1.7x.. a collector had pity on me and sold me the 140f, 01f, 200f for $90 total and all 3 don't seem to have ever been used.. i had no idea what it was worth... just that they don't seem to exist... do you happen to know where to get rear caps for them??

Hey roy,
Here's the link Tamron 200F 2X adaptall lens tele-converter - LOOK! - (eBay item 150192031259 end time Dec-12-07 13:19:50 PST)
I was going to put a bid in but it went too much for me, also I'd probably have to modify my 360b some more for it to fit because of the aluminum tube that protrudes from the rear- I trimmed it for the 140f to fit- I really like that TC. On lens caps KEH has a couple listed $8 for the rear clear one and $2.50 I think for the front.

For one of these in good condition, I think $600 is a fair price for just the lens.

I got mine for a little more than that with a PK/A adapter, 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, and a 112mm UV front protector, with the case, for a little more than that.

I have a few examples using the 1.7x AF Teleconverter, but right now Pbase sucks and none of the images are loading. Here is one that appears to be displaying. This is taken wide open (f/4.5). You'll have to click through and I hope it appears..
This is why I hate Pbase - Photo Won't Display.

Thanks so far for the replies.

Looks like about 400-600 depending on condition, case, accessories, etc.

I have a little time to think this one over, If I go for it, I will post results

It used to be worthed to buy but recently, they go for more than 500$. Considering the cost of the adaptall PKA and AF 1.7 adapter, the total cost becomes close to 1000$.
I wonder if it is worthed to buy this set instead of bigma.
What do you guys think?

I have seen very good reviews of that lens and it scored a 3.8 in Photodo (quite well for a long tele lens). I saw also some pictures taken with that lens and the 1.4x TC from tamron and they looked great. In ebay I saw them going consistently above 600 USD and some of them looked quite ugly.

When you consider I already own all but the lens, (bought the 1.7x in 1991 when I bought my PZ1, and have both K and KA adaptors for my 24mm f2.5) AND it is faster by 1 stop minimum, than the BIGMA, and I already have the low end better covered with my sigma 70-200 f2.8, no the BIGMA is not the better way to go. (at least in my opinion given what I already own )

What I am looking for is something that gives me 500mm, in a KA mount, so I can use P-TTL flash with my K10D.

At present, I use the 1.7x AF TC with my SMC 300mm F4. The problem is that without the KA mount, I can't use flash on my K10D. I use this with my *istD and flash to get great wildlife shots. But, the 300 F4 is also a stop slower, and that stop does mean a lot to me.

wow thats pretty good considering what you have to pay for the Pentax FA*.

Wait...how does a teleconvertor (200F 2x BBAR MC) mentioned go up to $360!! Is it that good/specialized?

Got a chance to try this out today on my camera, with my 1.7x AF TC (since this is most likely the only way I would use the lens)

I have a couple of questions for any owners of the lens.

When I tried it out, I was restrcted to F4.5. I have read somewhere that some of the adaptall lenses, with the KA mount are restricted to F4. I forget where now, but if I find the reference I will post it. Is this true, if so, is anyone else on this lens restricted to f4.5?

In general, I am not sure the restriction to F4 is a problem, because I intend to generally shoot with flash or be stopped down in bright daylight, but it has me wondering.

In shooting with it, I notice quite a lot of CA and Purple fringing what is the opinion of others using the 300 with the 1.7X AF TC ?

Hey lowell,
I go to f2.8 with either of my KA adapters (one is on my 80-200 f2.8) and have very little pf even wide open. Does the TC automatically change the aperture to the camera? (that would be good I guess). I really want a 1.7x adapter too but the one I was watching just went for $461
