Now I have the three limited (DA21/DA40/DA70) to go along with my 50/f1.7 ... which I love so much. Curious to know from any Pentaxians who have both the DA40 and a 50 ... which one do you use more ?

I use the 40 much more often but sometimes one desires the faster lens for special shots.

I have a A 50 1.7 and it's great but I haven't used it a lot since getting my da40. The 40 is probably my most-used lens. I love the size, quick focus, speed, and especially the color rendering. I only use the 50 for when I really need more speed or a situation where MF is more appropriate than AF. For me that's not very often.

I had focus troubles with my 40mm which neither I nor Pentax could not seem to fix so I exchanged it for the 43mm. The 43mm is by far my most used lens. But I miss the 40mm primarily for use with flash photography (wedding receptions) because it is punchy and brings excellent delineation to flash photos. I never had a problem with the FOV. In fact, I think it is just about right, encouraging clearly defined compositions and subjects, yet giving you room for a little space.

The idea of exchanging the 40mm (or 43mm) for the FA 50 f.1.4, and vice versa doesn't compute in my thinking. They are two completely different lenses and both are essential to me. The 50 f1.4 has a great, less contrasty look to it that I find very attractive. (You can up the contrast a bit with a lens hood.) Someone used the term "organic," and that works for me. Whenever I use it, I end asking myself why I don't use it more. Blame it on the 43mm. But there will be times when the wider aperture is needed. For the price, I don't see why anyone would skip over this gem of a lens.

GREAT lens, excellent sharpness, colors, very compact and worthy of the DA Limited designation for sure. The price is right for that little gem. I am a shallow DOF guy, so i traded up to the FA43, but if this DA40 were any faster, they'd probably have to make it quite a bit larger too. congrats on the purchase!

I have a DA40 and an FA50. I use the DA40 more, but only because I use my K-7 more often than my DS. I find that the DA40 tends to produce more exceptional photos on the K-7, while the FA50 tends to produce more exceptional photos on the DS, for whatever reason that I haven't quite figured out.

i have contemplated several times on selling off my da40, tempted by the fa43, but upon finding out it had 8 blades (personal pref for starburst) i decided to give the da 40 more of a go

now i do a lot more street shooting, ive rekindled my love for this lens - da 40 is really excellent and discreet

colours have a lot of contrast on this lens too

now i tend to use this in conditions where there is available light and i want to be discreet, or want to be really lightweight and leave the camera around my neck

ive always got the fa31 if i want faster or nicer "bokeh" or shallower dof

focal length wise it is still slightly longer than what i prefer (fa31 is perfect), but i found actually forcing myself to use this FL made a lot more quality shots

The starburst from the DA40 is one thing that I really don't like. 9 blades and 18 rays that aren't sharp. 50/1.7 has 6 sharp rays and the 50/1.4 and FA43 have 8 blades. And I've seen pics of the A50/1.4 with a great starburst.

I don't dislike the DA40 and my initial observations are that the colors are more vibrant than most of the lenses I own. It certainly blew the M28/2.8 out of the water last weekend. But I think the FA43 (or a FA/F 50) might be more my style. Or both...

I agree. The bokeh of the DA 40 is just somewhat odd. It's hard to really describe it, other than strange. I prefer the FA 50's crisp bokeh or the FA31's buttery smooth bokeh. I still like my DA 40 though!

That's funny; I have the DA 40 and all I can think about is the 35mm ltd. :ugh:
I recently bought a DA 40 and it's made my DA 35 Macro redundant. They are too similar in focal length to carry both, and the 40 is smaller. Also, the macro is often a liability as it makes focussing slower. The DA 40 will focus down to about a foot from the front of the lens, and that's usually close enough for me.

At the same time I got the 40 I got the DA 100 Macro, which I think is much better as a macro lens, and also useful as a telephoto or portrait lens. Although it's not a tiny Ltd, I think it suits me well enough that I don't need the DA 70 Ltd. I also have the DA 15 Ltd. I am finding those three - 15, 40 and 100 Macro - to be a good load-up; versatile without being too bulky or heavy.
