kit : sigma ex vs pentax limited

Just out of curiosity: For most of the shots I'm using FA43 and DA70 nowadays....and both are excellent lenses. But having seen too many excellent photos from 30/1.4 and 85/1.4 Sigmas, I wonder if I would go with the Limiteds or rather with Sigma Ex lenses nowadays. With Pentax lenses you have the advantage of small compact size, with Sigmas you get broader reach and faster kit.
So what would you choose?

Sigma 30/1.4 + Sigma 85/1.4
or
Pentax FA 43/1.9 + Pentax DA 70/2.4

DA70 is nice small lens, perfect optically. But I've chosen FA*85. It is not as large as Sigma and at least as good as Sigma. I really enjoy shooting f1.4.
The other comaprision is strange. FA43 is better to be compared to Sigma 50/1.4. The sigma 50 is actually closer to 45mm in reality, offering similar FOV as the FA43. Then it is matter of taste. Actually it only depends on which bokeh and lens character you prefer.

Yes DA70 is great indeed, I reckon all mentioned lenses are. What I like with both Sigmas is the way how they can isolate the object in focus, imho they excel in this better than their Pentax counterparts. FA*85 was interesting alternative too, but in Pentaxforums in depth review i had the feeling that Sigma showed much more convincing results in the photos. But then again perhaps it is not fair to compare new sigma design to an old fa* lens...

I'd choose the 30/1.4 + 85/1.4 everyday of the week

But thats me, they are larger but they are faster.
If you dont care so much about speed and small size is important, then the Limited's are hard to beat.

Funny. I guess I chose the middle ground, owning the Sigma 30 and the Pentax 70mm. I would choose based on focal length. 70mm already feels a little long to me, 85mm for what I take photos of is way too long. I personally would prefer to go out with Sigma 30 and Pentax DA *55 (and maybe someday I'll own the DA 15 to go with them, who knows?), but that is because I click with those focal lengths better.

Pentax lenses do have a nicer build than the Sigma Ex and having quick shift (which the 30mm doesn't have) is quite useful sometimes.

The 85mm is definitely up there in terms of IQ and af speed, but in terms of size you're not going to beat the 70mm (although for me personally the limiteds are too small to comfortably hold)

At this level, it's probably a matter of taste more than anything else.

Agreed. There are no bad choices among the lenses you have listed. I personally love my FA77 so much that I don't feel any need to try the Sigma 85, but I wouldn't fault anyone for choosing it. I've had a Sigma 30 and really liked it, but I also really like the FA43. I would, however, definitely choose the DA*55 over the Sigma 50. Not that it's a bad lens, but, IMO, the 55 is really something special, and is my most reliable portrait performer.

I have the 30/1.4 and the 43 Ltd. They are so different you can't compare them and I wouldn't part with either. Someone mentioned the FA*85/1.4 and I just read a review where it blew away the legendary Nikon 85/1.2 (comparison was made by a disbelieving Nikon user). The Contax Zeiss is a US$700 option to the FA*85 and the 77 Ltd a touch more again. However the 70 has outstanding reviews and specs though if you want portrait then I'd go for the 77 for it's better bokeh and if you want across the frames sharpness then the 70 is better.

IMHO the main difference is for people who care about size and weight.
Many Sigmas produce great results but are so huge and heavy many people in real day to day life dont take them on tour,

Very true. Like my Sigma 180 macro. great optics, but the odd mf/af switch is annoying and it is quite heavy... So it doesn't get used as much as my other lenses.

I have to apologise ... it is the top Canon 85/1.2 (and a Canon shooter) not Nikon ..... bloody old age.

Zeiss ZF 85mm f1.4: First Impressions

I know the link says Zeiss but it's the Canon 85mm f1.2 L (Mark II) vs.Pentax SMC-A* 85mm f1.4 !
