PK lens won't fit

Hi all,

I just picked up another lens second hand but it won't fit my *ist-DL.
I thought it would fit straight on as it is marked P/K.

The left lens in this pic is the one I refer to..
As you can see the flange is much longer around the circumference and prevents the lens from being inserted far enough into the camera for mounting.

I will cut the flange to something similar to the norm, like the right lens, and then it should be fine to fit it.

My questions are...What's the flange for ?
Does it really need to be there in the first place ?
(and anything else I should know)

It looks like the infamous Vivitar flange. It's there to protect against some bad mojo on some film cameras. It does nothing on dSLRs except get in the way. You needn't cut it -- just undo the screws holding it down and remove it. Stash the flange and screws, in case you ever want to sell the lens intact.

Ahh The old bad mojo on some film cameras trick.

I think you've given me pretty good advice...I'll check it out.
Thanks for that.
