Most expensive mirror lens ever? I know it's rare but $600+ really? Anyone ever used one of these?

It is indeed a litte gem amongst mirror lenses - that is, if you don't mind having some 60+ per cent of your pictures slightly off correct focus because it is so terribly difficult to focus properly. It is only so expensive because it is so rare - and it is only so rare because people didn't really fancy it in its time.

I am one of those who actually liked it in 1982. I still have it and you can find a review and some pics here:

It's eBay, anything can happen on eBay. I wouldn't pay that much for a catadioptric lens, especially when a 300/2.8 SP lenses can be found in the same ballpark or for a bit more.

Ah, another seller out trolling for suckers. I have a nice (optically too) little Sakar 500/8 mirror (US$13 shipped), and a damn good glass-and-metal M42 Alpa-Chinon 300/5.6 (US$27). The very small and lightweight Tamron mirror sounds appealing, but not US$600 appealing. I've also an Enna Tele-Ennalyt 240/4.5 (also US$27) that's as light as the the Tamron mirror, if physically a bit longer. What's a slow small light 300 worth? I'm sure some sucker will happily bite.

Well, don't blame the seller. He started out at a "modest" USD 199.99. Blame the bidders/collectors: It is bidder no. 20 that has brought the price level up to a current USD 613 --- 2½ days before the auction ends.........

OK, the seller is absolved. I usually start my sales at 99 cents. When they get bid up to US$75, I'm gratified. When they reach US$200, I'm astonished. And I just sold one for US$500 (for a relative, not for myself). OK, lucky seller here!

And the Winner is.....

.....the seller!

27 bids - and a winning bid of USD 735.

Hmmm, perhaps I should hire a bank vault for mine.
