Don't read this wrong... the others are excellent... even dazzling... I have no regrets, but the F version - for the money - is the most versatile and satisfying to use ... read the reviews in this forum... It took some time to find one, but the wait was worth it.

Cheers...
I second the recommendation; it's a great lens and probably worth the current price.

While I don't disagree that perhaps an AF lens would be worthwhile, I suspect the OP might be looking for something older and less expensive.

If you add up all my 28mm lenses, the total cost is something like $100, that is for the M28/2.8, the sigma mini wide 28/2.8(KA mount), an M42 Vivitar 28/2.5, a K mount Vivitar 28/2.5, the Tamron 28/2.5 in KA mount, and A Kiron 28/2.

...

The lenses that impress the most for the cost (~$10 each) are the vivitar 28/2.5 lenses.
The Vivitar 28/2.5, that's the Kiron/Kino one with the 67mm filter? I somehow resisted buying that one, but they seem very common. I did have the Tokina-made TX mount one, 58mm filter, and it wasn't very impressive. For the TX/T4, like the Adaptalls, the adapters can drive the total price beyond other options.

My Kiron-made 28/2.5 has a 62mm thread. My Komine-made 28/2 CFWA has a 49mm thread. I think we'll find a variety of Vivitar-branded 28's in f/2-2.5-2.8, some of which might be labeled CFWA (close-focus wide-angle), from an assortment of makers, in various models. There are 28s with 67mm threads? What a gaping maw!

fwiw, i had the bauer-made 28/2.8 and though the build was all plastic and the focus ring rubbed/squeaked everytime, the pics were as sharp as pretty much any of the others i had (tokina, kiron, komine, etc).

Just a quick note, the M42 version ov the Vivitar 28/2.5 is a 62mm thread, the K-mount version is 67mm filter thread, I have one of each, and in fact the M42 version is the only M42 28 mm lens I own, in K mount I have Kiron 28/2, Vivitar 28/2.5, Tamron 28/2.5, sigma mini wide II 28/2.8 andSMC-M 28/2.5

RioRico warns against the Meyer / Pentacon 29 - but don't discount the Pentacon 30. It's a great lens that shows vibrant colours, nice and sharp as well. And as a bonus, it's cheap and there's a lot about.

I use A 28/2 as the second walk around lens (the first one is 43 lim). It is great lens, if you can find it. Not cheap though. It is great for landscapes, city and even some close up. Bokeh is perfectly fine. I also have K 30/2.8 but I like it less -- hard to focus.

A couple of pictures from A 28/2:

Ooh, the A 28/2. I looked for that lens for a while, never found one. I am currently trying to decide between a Sigma 28/1.8 and a Vivitar CF 28/2. It basically comes down to small size vs. AF, and both are appealing. Haven't quite figured it out yet,
