My favorite model (or LBA strikes again)

On my way home from work, decided to pop in an and old shop; that old can actually be taken literally because the 3 owners have roughly 180 years photographic experience together.

Nowadays they seem to live of rentals of light systems and act as a broker for old gear. They do not even sell dSLRs.

Was hoping to find a 35mm or 28mm Takumar to complete my M42 kit, but walked out with a M120/2.8 for roughly US$30 (ZAR250). Looks OK, optical nothing wrong to be found.

And here a shot of my favorite model Peanut taken with the K5

once upon a time, there were several old shops that had reasonable amounts of used gear, however the owners have either retired and / or (sadly) died in thepast few years, and the remaining shopw that do carry used gear generally post it on E-Bay and sell on line because Europeans are willing to pay more than Canadians.

All the pawn shops have been cleaned out of camera gear as well, although some new peices do come in, they too seem to go onto E-Bay first.

Since the last small shop closed, I have only bought 1 M42 lens, and 3 k mounts.

Hi Sterretje

Is your favourite shop in Jhb by any chance? If so, I must avoid it!

Yep; Joburg area.

Don't read further !!

The shop where I got this from is Cas Cameras in Randburg. The other shop is Kameraz in Rosebank; haven't been there for a while but they got me a SMC Tak 135/3.5 for ZAR200 and a SuperTak 300/4 for ZAR600. My SuperTak 55/1.8 comes from a shop in Randburg that no longer exists; costed ZAR500 (which I found expensive )

Sadly those little shops are nearly gone. There are a few near me yet, one in particular I stop into when I can. The owner must be in his 80's and he says his daughter only allows him to open the shop a few days a week. The shop is almost like a museum with everything from large format folders to Kodak Brownies to who knows what. He has a bunch of really old lighting equipment and any kind of enlarger you can think of. He really does not want to sell anything but loves to show off things and explain what they were used for. He has had a few Takumars but never anything I needed at the time. He really hates digital cameras and will tell you at great length that they have ruined photography.

I thought I got a good price on the M120/2.8 ($120) but I guess not. I originally thought 120mm was unnecessary because I had great 135mm lenses, the K135/2.5 and the M135/3.5. However, the K is too big to work well as a travel lens - bringing it meant leaving something else at home. And the M is nice but just a bit slow. The perfect compromise is the Pentax-M 120mm f2.8. It's just about the same size as the M135/3.5, with the hood, 8 blades and 49mm filter, but faster and focuses a bit closer. That meant I could sell the K135/2.5, the M135/3.5, and a Takumar 105/2.8 that I wasn't using but kept for the slightly closer focusing. Now the 120 is a nice step up from my 90/2.5 macro, great for travel, and I don't miss the K.

Old stores, can't see nothing wrong with that, I have 2 stores close to myself. One is Life line, so far Me has aquired 3x k1000, m50 1.7, a 50 1.2, A hanmex 135 3.5 m42 I dont get this lens it has 14 blades???? 3X Me SE with brown skin. All at a cost of around 5$ each. The lenses work fine and are mint, not sure on cameras! The other store I scored a Tammy 500 F8 mint in box with filters 20$. I seem to have no probs with lenses on k10, 20 and 7.
Always hunting that bargin
trying to dodge LBA

I would think if they had actually been submerged it would be obvious. It would take a complete diss-assembly to clean and that would cost far more than $5. If that is indeed an A 50mm 1.2 (not f/2) take good care of it. Those can go on ebay for $400 - $500.
