Pentax DA 35mm f2.4 - Issues & Challenges

I read some bad things about the behavior of the DA 35mm f2.4 on the Pentax Kx. However, since I got the K5 and the price of the lens went down, I ordered it from one of the two big sponsors of the forum. The first time I tried it on the K5 was perfect. I really like the lens. I was perfect for a party I was shooting. I put is aside for couple of weeks and I used it on the Kx and found that I could not use it in Av priority, the f dial did not turn. In fact, it did not work in any mode at all. So, I was ready to call the place I purchased it from, when I decided to try it on the K5, and it was just fine. My question is: Is this lens designed for K7 and K5? Does anyone have problems with it on the Kx? Thanks, Pepe.

Works well with my K-r. Also use it with my film Pentax. Once one of my lenses did not work and I turned off the camera unmounted the lens put the lens back on and then turned the camera back on. It might be just not making contacts properly.

It is the DA35mmf2.4's fault

I double check with my other Pentax Kx, and I have the same problem in both. First, I put them in automatic everything, it hunts for what to select and finally shows no Shutter Speed, nor f. Then I switch to Av or M, and worst, nothing happens. Then, I set to ALLOW APERTURE (as I do with the manual lenses), and it works with f2.4 (wide open) only, so I cannot set neither f, nor shutter speed. I pulled the second Kx to check if the problem was the camera and the same thing. Instead, when I install the lens on the K5, it works just fine, in every single mode. I am just puzzled by this. The lens seems perfect on the K5, but weird on the Kx. Any suggestions? This lens does not have an aperture ring, so I cannot control it. I am going to look for the receipt to see if it was purchased at B&H (most likely) or at Adorama. I hope I can get a positive answer after more than two months, since I purchased the lens.

I used it for a while on my K200D with no issues. Same with my K-5. I love this lens.

Every single lens manual or AF works fine. I just sent a request to B&H for a return. I bought it in October 9, but I have used it only twice, once I got it on the K5, and few days ago when I tried to use it on the Kx.

It's unusual.
My copy works fine on both my K-x and K-5, despite some backfocusing in low light.

Guess what, I just had the same problem the past week! Yesterday, I was shooting a neighbor's baby shower and used AV F3.5 with a flash. As the noon day sun begins to shine into the room, I tired to move it to F5.6 but nothing happens

I was using a K-20D and decided to move the dial to AUTO and see if will work. No dice. So I end up having to use the kit 18-55mm II for the rest of the event (after having blown pics every other shot), which itself works flawlessly!

Back home, I tried disconnecting the battery grip from the K-20D altogether and reconnect it after like a minute. Only after this was I able to change the aperture again on the 35mm F2.4.

Pepe, you are not alone.

Sounds like the info contacts on the lens are just dirty enough to not transmit on your K-x, but that the K-5 is a little more forgiving.

Hi Marc:
I actually sent the lens to Pentax (in Arizona), the lens is still under one year warranty by manufacturere. B&H were very helpful pointing out where to send it. It took two weeks buy I got it on time for Christmas. They said, one of the contacts was not right, so they change all of them. The lens is just fine now. That goes to say that if you buy used, you have to be careful. I try to buy from B&H or Adorama, they are wonderful with their support. Pentax was also very effective. I documented the whole case in the ASK B&H section. The lens is worth having. Very light and nice to use.
