actually the K series really got thier name because of 2 things. The bayonet mount was called the K mount, and the first series of bayonet cameras was the K range KX, KM, K2, K2DMD, K1000.
the M series cameras came out with M lenses (not sure if M stands for mineature or not but they were competing with the olympus at the time and the OM-10 to be the smallest cameras on the market)
M lenses also use the K mount.
A series lenses came out with the Program Series cameras, and have a KA mount (a standing for automatic i think)
and so on....
