FA77: Better rendering when stopped down?

I was discussing with a commercial photographer about FA77 and he mentioned that he prefers to shoot at f2.8 or f2 with FA77 and never at f1.8. According to him, overall rendering/bokeh is much better at f2.8 or f2 compared to at f1.8. It's about rendering, not worried about sharpness much (FA77 is pretty sharp wide open).

I understand that every lens is better when stopped down but somehow I have been shooting FA77 wide open. I will be testing this myself but at the same time would to know how do you use your FA77, do you use it wide open or stop down a bit?

One of the primary draws of the FA77 is the out of focus rendering, and the transition to OOF regions. I interpret your acquaintance's comments primarily in terms of depth of field:

1) at f/1.8, unless you are a little ways from your subject, your DOF is so narrow that it can sometimes look rather flat. Stopping down slightly increases the DOF and allows for some of that "3d" OOF transition.

2) The FA77 bokeh is very interesting and pleasing, often because OOF areas manage to display clear detail, but do so in an unobtrusive way. At f/1.8 you may have too narrow of a DOF to retain any OOF detail whatsoever.
