Just how sharp is sharp? (Pentax-FA 50mm 2.8)

So I go this lens a few weeks ago, but I've been busy with classes and have not had much chance to play with it yet. I took it out walking this weekend and snapped a few pics here and there, and it certainly lives up to its reputation as one of the sharpest lenses Pentax makes. For example, take a look at the following picture and actual 100% crop. Mind you, this is handheld at f/4 1/200s.

Yeah, I'd say it's sharp.

Shoot it at F8 and it should be even sharper, according to lens tests on the web.

I want this lens, btw.

I hear you on the f/8. When I have some free time, I'm going to do some arranged shots with strobe and tripod. Then I hope to see what this piece is really capable of.

I was lucky enough to get a very good ebay deal because there is a hairline crack in the distance scale window (which doesn't affect the function at all). Even at the going rate, this lens would have been worth it. Very pleased with the purchase.

Nice, and that bokeh looks pretty good to me, no harsh lines.

My K20D pretends that this lens is at its sharpest at around f3,5~f4, so I doubt you'd see a true gain at f8, except that a larger DOF will be in focus.

@Pentaxor. Ha, yeah, in this one, the ant was kinda incidental. I was really just doing a very quick test shot on the tree rings to get an idea of how sharp it was and fortuitously caught the ant. I was floored when I blew up the photo onscreen and saw the antenna detail.

Very nice shot you have there, BTW

@bdery: I'm shooting with a K5, so I'm hoping that the increased sensor resolution might help me resolve even more fine detail at f/8. In my limited testing, I suspect that this lens can even outresolve the sensor on the K5!

I believe it can. If you use MTF program line, the camera will select the sharpest aperture for you, if possible. You'll see it does not select f8, but it will still be ludicrously sharp at f8

I swapped it for the DFA 100 macro WR (because of focal length, not swharpness) and it's ALMOST as sharp, but not quite.
